Tomorrow night, when Roma and Milan play the second leg of their Europa League quarterfinal match at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, the atmosphere in the Italian city will be electrifying.

Gianluca Mancini's headed goal midway through the first half let the Giallorossi escape with a tight 1-0 victory in the first leg, despite losing both of their league encounters this season. Roma's victory over Milan was their first since 2019. Going into Thursday, they have a slight but possibly significant lead.

In the meanwhile, the Rossoneri want to get past their painful 3-3 league tie against Sassuolo on Sunday and their home loss last week, which was only their second of 2024.

In the semifinals, the victor of the matchup will play either West Ham United or the recently crowned German champions Bayer Leverkusen. The game will begin at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome at 21.00 CET.

With a slim advantage going into the game, Roma is only 90 minutes from making it to their third straight European semifinal in as many seasons.

Given that the second leg is being played at home on Thursday, where the capital club has been so strong this season, they won't be without confidence. In fact, in 22 games played at the Stadio Olimpico this season (W16, D4, 2L), throughout all competitions, the Giallorossi have only lost twice. Roma has also progressed from their past six knockout matches in significant European tournaments when they have hosted the home leg of the match.

Milan is going to battle to the death. This is their last hope; they want to prevail and fulfill one of their season's goals. Before the game, manager Daniele De Rossi warned reporters, "It will be difficult."

"You have to take into account the decisions made by the opposing management and constantly respect certain aspects of the opposition. The first leg against Milan was quite well matched; maybe things went a little better for us.

"But we can't overthink our own gameplan because Milan won't change their tactics too much," the statement said.

Regarding his choice of players for the team, De Rossi and Roma exhaled with pleasure after Evan Ndicka received the all-clear after collapsing during Sunday's postponed league match against Udinese. The Ivorian is currently unavailable to play Milan despite having served a one-match suspension in the first leg, however it is anticipated that he will be back in the coming weeks.

Fortunately for Roma, experienced defender Chris Smalling's outstanding performance last week made Ndicka's absence almost entirely insignificant. Despite an injury-plagued year, the former Manchester United player put on a defensive masterclass at San Siro.

De Rossi hopes Edoardo Bove, the midfielder, to make the same kind of progress. Bryan Cristante, who is also serving a one-game suspension, is one of Roma's most reliable and dependable players. The young player will have the difficult challenge of replacing him.

For the visitors, Milan's options are clear-cut: win or lose. Despite the fact that it is undoubtedly a difficult endeavor, there is great cause for confidence given the Rossoneri's long European history.

Stefano Pioli's tactics and mindset will undoubtedly be focused on attacking and creating as many possibilities for goals to be scored as possible, given that his team is down one goal going into the match.

In his pregame news conference, Pioli said, "We have the utmost confidence and belief in ourselves."

"I believe we have every component needed to succeed and put on a fantastic show. We should not focus on the first leg since it is no longer relevant. It's obvious that there are some areas we need to improve on in order to cause additional difficulties for the opponent.

"But it's a new game, a whole new 90 minutes that will demand a lot of quality and energy on both sides," the speaker said.

Fortunately for him, Milan has a few additional choices for the match, the most important of them being defender Fikayo Tomori. Alongside Matteo Gabbia, who is set to start over Malick Thiaw, the Englishman is expected to play defense, with Rafael Leao, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Christian Pulisic, and Olivier Giroud leading the attack.
