Barcelona head into Sunday’s game following a thrilling Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan, where the Italian side narrowly advanced 7-6 on aggregate after a 4-3 win in the second leg on Tuesday.

Hansi Flick’s team came agonizingly close to advancing, with Raphinha giving them the lead in the match and the tie in the 87th minute, but Inter equalized in the 93rd minute and struck again in extra time to shatter Barcelona’s dreams.

The disappointment is fading, however, and Barcelona can still reflect on a remarkable season if they secure the La Liga title, having already claimed the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey in 2025.

Barcelona firmly hold the reins in the La Liga title race, four points ahead of Real Madrid at the top, and they’ve won their last four matches in Spain’s top division, including a 2-1 victory against Real Valladolid last weekend.

The Catalan club will take on Espanyol, Villarreal, and Athletic Bilbao in their final three league matches, and even a draw on Sunday would keep them in a commanding position, though a loss could give Real Madrid an opening.

Flick’s squad has already defeated Real Madrid three times this season, including a 4-0 rout at Bernabeu in La Liga last October, and they’ve also emerged victorious in the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey finals this year.

Real Madrid remain mathematically alive in the title race, but realistically, anything less than a win this weekend will all but end their hopes of finishing on top.

While Los Blancos claimed the UEFA Super Cup in August, failing to secure La Liga would render this season a major disappointment—especially after their Champions League quarter-final exit to Arsenal and Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona.

A managerial change appears imminent this summer, with Xabi Alonso, Bayer Leverkusen’s highly rated boss, the clear favorite to replace Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian, meanwhile, could be headed to the Saudi Pro League for his next challenge.

Madrid have had a full week to prepare for this clash, last playing in a 3-2 victory over Celta Vigo. They enter the match in strong form, having won their last four league games—keeping three clean sheets—and boast a solid recent record against Barcelona, including a 2-1 win in this fixture last season.
