USA vs Trinidad and Tobago

Group D of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup kicks off on Sunday with the USA facing Trinidad and Tobago at PayPal Park in San Jose, California.

The U.S. team enters the tournament following a 4-0 loss to Switzerland in a friendly, while Trinidad and Tobago suffered a 2-1 defeat to Costa Rica in a 2026 World Cup qualifier earlier this week.

The United States, a powerhouse in the CONCACAF region, has faced a challenging 2025. Their three-year streak as CONCACAF Nations League champions ended, and they didn’t medal in the latest edition. Mauricio Pochettino’s squad is on a four-game losing streak across all competitions, failing to produce a single shot on target against Switzerland.

Despite this, the U.S. remains the clear favorite to lead Group D, maintaining an unbeaten record in their last 19 Gold Cup group stage matches since 2013. They’ve also dominated Caribbean teams in recent competitive matches, securing three straight wins against Jamaica with a combined score of 8-3. Against Trinidad and Tobago specifically, the U.S. has won all 15 home games this century without conceding a goal.

Trinidad and Tobago, competing in their fourth consecutive Gold Cup, aim to advance past the group stage for the first time since 2015. Coached by Dwight Yorke, the Soca Warriors have struggled, losing three of their last four matches and conceding 11 goals in those games. However, they’ve been solid in their opening Gold Cup group matches, remaining unbeaten in their last two (2021 and 2023) without conceding.

Scoring first has been key for Trinidad, as they haven’t lost a Gold Cup group match when doing so since a 2-1 defeat to El Salvador in 2007. Their last Gold Cup victory against a North American team was a 4-0 win over Mexico in 1973. Their most recent success against the U.S. was a 2-1 win in the 2023 Nations League, though their best result on U.S. soil was a 1-1 draw in a 1989 World Cup qualifier.
