Cagliari, who just put an end to their losing streak in stunning fashion, will look to gain further momentum when they face Udinese on Wednesday night in the Coppa Italia second round.

While their hosts have already changed coaches and are still waiting for their first league victory, the Rossoblu overcame a three-goal deficit to win their first Serie A title since being promoted.

After a 13-game losing skid, the Fruilani welcomed former coach Gabriele Cioffi back to the bench as they languished within Serie A's relegation zone. However, his return was unable to spark their first three-point haul of 2023–24.

After trailing 1-0 at the break, Udinese pulled even in the 66th minute through a goal from substitute Lorenzo Lucca, set up by Christian Kabasele. With ten games under their belt, they lead this week's cup rivals by one point and two spots.

Lucca's goal in stoppage time at Stadio Fruili during the 4-1 Coppa Italia victory over Serie B team Catanzaro in mid-August, therefore, remains the last time the Bianconeri experienced victory.

Udinese, who are considered regional outsiders, have never won Italy's national cup before. Considering how this season has started, it seems improbable that they would succeed in doing so the following spring.

But, going into Wednesday's match, Cioffi and co. will be greatly motivated by the opportunity to secure a last-16 fixture with AC Milan and earn a rare victory in front of their supporters.

The midweek opponents may not remember what it's like to win all possible points, but Cagliari has finally felt that happiness after a protracted dry spell.

Veteran striker Leonardo Pavoletti, who was substituted in at halftime with his team losing 2-0, made a significant impact up front to aid Claudio Ranieri's club in rallying from a three-goal deficit with 70 minutes remaining.

The hero of the previous season's playoff final, Pavoletti scored twice in the last seconds to lead Cagliari to victory in a thrilling seven-goal match against fellow promoted team Frosinone and to the league title.

Turning history on its head in such an unlikely way could prove to be a turning point for the Sardinians, who have dropped the most points from winning positions of any Serie A team this season after taking three points from their opening nine games and finding themselves near the bottom of the table.

Ranieri will be well aware, though, that his club is still very much a work in progress since they have given up at least two goals in each of their previous six games (17 overall).

Cagliari's last victory came in the Coppa Italia first round, where they defeated Palermo in thrilling extra time. That victory came before Sunday's incredible comeback. The 1969 cup runners-up appear to be no strangers to chaos, then.
