On Thursday night, French club Toulouse will host Austrian team LASK Linz at the Stadium de Toulouse for a Europa League group-stage matchup.
Les Violets and the Black-Whites both lost their initial Group E games, 1-1 to Union SG for Les Violets and 3-1 to Liverpool for the Black-Whites, respectively.
For the first time in 14 years, Toulouse, playing in European competition, was on track to win all three points in their opening Group E match at Union SG. Thijs Dallinga's first-half penalty gave Toulouse the lead going into the last 30 minutes.
However, Les Violets were forced to accept a third consecutive draw across all categories after Belgian hosts' substitute Mohamed Amoura scored an equalizer in the 69th minute to salvage a point.
Since then, Carles Martinez's team has had mixed results in Ligue 1, losing 2-1 at Lens and then winning 3-0 at home against Metz last weekend due to goals from Dallinga, Niklas Schmidt, and Frank Magri.
After seven games, Toulouse, who is now ranked 11th in Ligue 1, is looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season as they take on Austrian opposition LASK Linz in a European match.
The current Coupe de France champions have yet to lose at home this season, and, barring qualifiers, they have lost just twice in their last 11 home games in European play. This is encouraging going into Thursday's meeting.
Similar to Toulouse, LASK Linz was ahead of Premier League powerhouse Liverpool two weeks ago after a 14th-minute goal from Florian Flecker gave the Austrian team a shock advantage.
The Black-Whites' seven-game unbeaten streak in all competitions was ended by the Reds after the interval, thanks to goals from the offensive three of Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, and Mohamed Salah.
Since then, Thomas Sageder's team has gone 1-1-1 in their last three domestic matches, with a 3-0 Austrian Cup victory over a lower-league team called Imst sandwiched between a scoreless draw with Hartberg and a 2-1 loss at Wolfsberger last weekend. As a result, they have fallen seven points behind Red in the Austrian Bundesliga.
Thursday's excursion outside of Austria will be welcomed by LASK Linz, who have won their past five away games in group stage of European play, including two in the Europa League against Antwerp and Ludogorets.
The Black-Whites prioritize getting back to winning ways and will consider Thursday's match against Toulouse as a crucial game in their quest to finish in the top two of Group E and make it to the Europa League knockout stages for the first time in four years.
