On Wednesday evening, Group A action in the CONCACAF Gold Cup wraps up matchday two with a clash between Suriname and Mexico at AT&T Stadium in Texas.

Suriname suffered a 5-3 defeat to Costa Rica in their opening group match over the weekend, while Mexico secured a narrow 3-2 victory against the Dominican Republic.

On Sunday, Suriname nearly claimed their first Gold Cup win in almost four years. Stanely Menzo’s squad overcame a 2-0 deficit to take the lead with less than 15 minutes to go, only to collapse late, conceding twice, including a stoppage-time penalty in the 13th minute.

That loss snapped Suriname’s four-game unbeaten streak across all competitions and marked their first defeat since a 3-0 loss to Canada in November 2024. They’ve now lost their last five matches against North American teams, failing to score in each.

Historically, Suriname have taken the lead in five of their Gold Cup matches but only won once, a 2-1 victory over Guadeloupe in July 2021. They haven’t suffered back-to-back losses against CONCACAF teams since Canada defeated them in both legs of the Nations League quarter-finals last November.

Mexico, meanwhile, faced a tough challenge in their opener, allowing five shots on target but holding off a determined Dominican Republic side. Javier Aguirre’s team didn’t score until late in the first half but have now won 11 straight matches when scoring first.

The defending Gold Cup champions, who won their record 12th title in 2023, conceded as many goals in their last game as they did throughout the entire 2023 tournament. Mexico remain unbeaten in their last seven Gold Cup matches and haven’t lost a matchday two group game since a 2-1 defeat to Honduras in 2007.

A win on Wednesday, paired with a Costa Rican victory over the Dominican Republic, would secure Mexico’s spot in the quarter-finals. This will be the fourth meeting between Mexico and Suriname, with Mexico dominating the previous three encounters by a combined score of 16-1.
