Tuesday night's Championship match between Stoke City and Southampton will be held at the bet365 Stadium.

Both teams will enter a match that was a Premier League match as recently as 2018 feeling a touch underwhelmed by their respective season debuts.

Despite this, the two enter the midweek group of games riding high after encouraging wins.

On Saturday, Stoke bravely rallied from a 2-0 hole after just 15 minutes to defeat Bristol City with just seconds remaining.

The Potters won 3-2 at Ashton Gate thanks to Nathan Lowe's first-ever senior goal in the 89th minute.

Given that Stoke entered the game on a run of one draw and four losses in five games, it was much needed.

Their only result during that period was a draw against Huddersfield Town, and a week ago they were eliminated by Premier League Bournemouth from the EFL Cup.

But the three points they earned over the weekend were crucial because they kept them out of the Championship's very crowded bottom half, where they were in danger of being relegated.

After the 3-2 victory, Stoke moved up to 16th, but they are still only two points out of the relegation zone, so it is imperative that they maintain that level of play or Alex Neil's job could remain in jeopardy.

Southampton entered the season with lofty goals of returning immediately to the Premier League following its relegation from the previous year.

With 10 points from their first four games under Russell Martin, the Saints had a great start and moved up into the promotion spots.

However, a 3-1 victory over Leeds United within a month brought a team that was falling down the table a great deal of relief.

Southampton had dropped towards the middle of the table after four successive defeats, with a 5-0 thumping at Sunderland and a 4-1 setback at home to Leicester City being particularly detrimental.

With their victory on Saturday, Martin's team moved up to 10th place, just three points outside the playoffs. Kamaldeen Sulemana also made his season debut.

The Ghanaian appeared to be leaving late in the transfer window, but when nothing happened, he was brought back into the team. However, in his first appearance of the season against Leicester, he was dismissed.

However, in his first start on Saturday, Sulemana was crucial, assisting two goals as Southampton quickly took a 3-0 lead, with two of the goals coming from Adam Armstrong, who now shares the league scoring lead with Sulemana with seven goals.
