When Sporting Lisbon hosts Tondela at the storied Estadio Jose Alvalade on Tuesday night, they hope to guarantee their spot in the Taca de Portugal quarterfinals.

After Sporting's 2-1 triumph over the visitors in the Taca da Liga last month, which advanced them to the competition's semifinals, this will be the sides' second meeting of the season.

After defeating CD Olivais e Moscavide 3-1 in the third round and Dumiense CJPII 8-0 in the final round, Sporting Lisbon made it to this level of the competition.

With 17 victories, the last of which came in 2019, the Lions are the only teams in Taca de Portugal history to trail behind Benfica (26), and Porto (19).

The team led by Ruben Amorim will go into this game fresh off a 5-1 Primeira Liga victory against Estoril, which allowed them to maintain their top spot in the standings with 40 points after 16 games.

Sporting is in the running for every trophy after a fantastic start to the season that has seen them advance to the Europa League knockout stages.

The home team has dominated this matchup historically, winning the last six meetings between the two teams dating back to June 2020. During that span, they have only allowed two goals while scoring 14 goals.

The Lions have a strong home record, having won their past nine games at Estadio Jose Alvalade across all competitions, so they will be confident going into this game in addition to their excellent record versus the visitors.

Tondela has already defeated Sporting de Pombal in round two of this competition, as well as 1º Dezembro in round three. In the fourth round, they pulled off a tenacious 4-2 victory over Torreense thanks to penalties, which secured their match with Sporting.

This season, Toze Marreco's team has enjoyed success in cup tournaments. However, they have found it difficult to carry over their cup form into the league, as they currently sit in seventh position, nine points behind the top three.

Talk of Sporting switching up their lineup for this game may have left the Gold and Greens with low expectations, but an early goal from the visitors might liven things up in what will be their first-ever encounter in this competition against the home team.
