Sporting Lisbon and Benfica will play out their last match of the Primeira Liga in 2024 on Sunday in round 16 against each other at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

As it is, the two teams have not shared any spoils in the last three confrontations of the teams this year and so As Aguias will perhaps want to edge out their rivals this time.

They faced another shock last Sunday when Sporting Lisbon created a number of good opportunities but failed to score a goal, playing out a barren draw with Gil Vicente at the Estadio Cidade de Barcelos.

Despite dominating the game, having more than 60 percent of the ball possession and creating quite a number of scoring chances, the visitors were unable to breach the might of Andrew, the Gil Vicente’s goal tender.

Before that, Sporting Lisbon nearly crumbled into embarrassment in the fifth round of Taca de Portugal on December 18, when it was only saved by Viktor Gyokeres’ 115th-minute winning goal which took them through to beat Santa Clara 2-1 in the extra time at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The Leoes have not won five of their last seven fixtures across all tournaments, with four defeats and one draw, and have thus cost Joao Pereira has been relieved of his duties at the helm of affairs.

They have won 11 out of the preceding 15 Primeira Liga matches to garner 37 points and occupy the second spot on the league standings chart alongside third placed FC Porto but a point ahead of the Sunday’s opponents at the zenith of the stack.

On the other hand, when the two teams faced off in the Estadio da Luz on Monday, Benfica easily defeated Estoril Praia, winning 3-0 on the road.

Switzerland international Zeki Amdouni scored twice off the bench to complete a strong team performance and give the visitors their seventh league loss after Vangelis Pavlidis opened the scoring in the 28th minute to put As Aguias ahead.

With seven victories and two draws since their 1-0 Champions League loss to Bayern Munich in November, Benfica has now gone nine games without a loss in all competitions. With 10 points from six games, they are now ranked 15th in the rankings.

As part of this impressive run of success, Bruno Lage's team defeated Estrela Amadora 7-0 at the Estadio da Luz on November 23 to secure their place in the fifth round of the Taca de Portugal.

Although Benfica will try to extend their advantage at the top of the table by four points this weekend, they have lost twice and drawn once in their three matches with Sporting across all competitions this year.

Rui Borges, 43, was signed by Sporting Lisbon from Vitoria de Guimaraes after Pereira left, and he will be hoping to make an immediate impression at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The 23-year-old defender, Goncalo Inacio, has been sidelined for the home team for the past four games after he was hurt during the encounter against Moreirense on December 5.

Nuno Santos, 29, is also out of contention for this weekend's game as he continues his arduous journey to full health following a knee injury sustained back in October.

Tiago Gouveia, a 23-year-old attacker, has been out for Benfica since suffering a shoulder injury during the team's match against Estrela Amadora in August.

Renato Sanches, a fellow Portuguese player who has missed all eight of the team's games since suffering a muscular ailment in November, joins him on the club's injury table.
