Sporting Lisbon vs Moreirense

Sporting’s brief dip from the top spot lasted just a week, with their narrow victory gaining extra weight after rivals Benfica stumbled in a 2-2 draw with Arouca the next day.

That outcome put Rui Borges’s side back on top via goal difference, while stretching their unbeaten streak in the league to 16 games, including five victories in their last six outings.

With only two league losses this season, Sporting now face Moreirense, the team that handed them their most recent top-flight defeat in a 2-1 result back in December 2024.

That loss marked just the second time in their last seven league clashes with Moreirense that Sporting failed to secure points, though past trends favor them, as the Verde e Brancos have always managed at least one win in this matchup each season.

Backed by that history and a strong home record – earning 35 points at home, the second-best in the league – the Lions will look to assert their dominance under the Friday night spotlight.

Moreirense, on the other hand, saw their five-match unbeaten streak under Cristiano Bacci halted last weekend with a 2-0 home loss to Rio Ave.

With a record of nine victories, eight draws, and twelve losses, Os Verdes e Brancos are still 12 points ahead of the relegation playoff slot despite the outcome, sitting in 10th place in the standings with 35 points.

But when compared to their 55-point finish from the previous season, which was their best-ever total in the top division, Bacci's team may be deemed to have had a relatively lackluster year.

Their poor away performance—they have only won once in their past eight league games—has been a major factor in that decline, but the new manager's impact has shown indications of improvement, as they have picked up four points from their last two visits.
