Sheriff Tiraspol will be welcomed to the Fortuna Arena on Thursday by Group G leaders Slavia Prague in the Europa League.

On the opening day of play, the Moldovan champions were narrowly defeated by the finalists from the previous year, Roma, while Slavia defeated Servette with ease in Geneva.Slavia is the favorite to advance alongside Roma in this round after their 2-0 victory in Switzerland two weeks ago.

The Slaviste have advanced to the quarterfinals in three of the previous five seasons, but they will be hoping to rebound following a disappointing campaign in 2017.

It was quite unfortunate for them to not advance from a group in the Europa Conference League that included Sivasspor, CFR Cluj, and Ballkani, but this time around, they have gotten off to the best possible start with a victory away from home.

After losing to Teplice at the weekend, they haven't won in the Czech top division since their victory on the continent.

Given that their opponents' missed a first-half penalty, Jindrich Trpisovsky's team was also fortunate to escape with a 0-0 draw.

It would be disappointing to trail Sparta Prague by two points after they successfully handled a difficult test against Viktoria Plzen. Trpisovsky will be hoping his team can turn things around in Europe.

In their only league matchup since the trip to Geneva, Slavia and Sparta drew in the Prague derby, but despite being winless in those two league contests, Slavia had only dropped three of their previous 47 games.

Slavia's home record in Europe is also impressive, as the Czech team has only suffered three losses in 23 games played at the Fortuna Arena.

Should Sheriff manage to pull off the feat once more and make a comeback from this encounter, it would cause a same amount of shock.

Sheriff advanced solely on away goals in that encounter because they have never won a game in the Czech Republic, losing twice and drawing three times.

Finishing in the top two would also be somewhat of a surprise in the history books for Sheriff, who have never advanced through the groups in Europe.

Sheriff could have to be content with competing for third in the section if they lose again tonight after falling to Roma on matchday one.

They accomplished it during the previous campaign, which caused them to be demoted to the Europa Conference League, where Sheriff went on to defeat Partizan Belgrade and won their first-ever European knockout match.

However, given that the Moldovan champions have only triumphed twice in their last 16 Europa League games, this tournament has frequently been a considerably tougher test.
