Real Madrid, who have been confirmed as runners-up in Spain's top division this season, will try to give their fans something to cheer about when they go to Sevilla on Sunday night for their penultimate game of the season.

Sevilla’s triumph marked their first La Liga victory since March 9, securing their position in Spain’s top division for the final two matchdays. With 41 points from 36 games, they sit seven points clear of the relegation zone, alleviating any concerns about dropping down.

Los Nervionenses finished 14th in La Liga last season, their lowest standing since their relegation in 2000, and this term they could slip further, potentially ending as low as 17th.

Under Joaquin Caparros, Sevilla have recorded six wins, six draws, and six losses in their 18 home league matches this season. They now face a Real Madrid side that has only managed to win nine of their 18 away league games in the 2024-25 season.

Sevilla fell 4-2 to Real Madrid in their earlier encounter at the Bernabeu this season, and they haven’t defeated Los Blancos since September 2018. However, the two sides played out a 1-1 draw when they met at Estadio Ramon last season.

Real Madrid claimed the UEFA Super Cup in August, but their La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Champions League campaigns have fallen short. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti is set to depart after a lackluster final season in charge.

Ancelotti will take the reins of Brazil’s national team, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso widely tipped to succeed him. It will be intriguing to see how Los Blancos perform next season under their former midfielder’s leadership.

Real Madrid staged a late comeback to defeat Mallorca 2-1 on Wednesday, with Jacobo Ramon scoring the decisive goal in the closing moments. However, the result was rendered moot as Barcelona clinched the La Liga title the following day.
