Real Madrid will be eyeing a return to winning ways in La Liga after they were handed a humiliating defeat in the Champions League midweek and they will entertain Getafe at the Bernabeu on Sunday afternoon.

Los Blancos lost 2-0 to Liverpool in the European Cup on Wednesday night and Getafe enters the match after beating Manises 3-0 in the Copa Del Rey on Tuesday night.

Real Madrid has lost three of its previous five games in all competitions, surrendering home games to Barcelona and AC Milan in the final week of Oct and the opening week of Nov and then suffering a 2-0 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday night, and this was fully deserved against Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

Kylian Mbappe was culpable of missing a penalty at Anfield, similarly to Mohamed Salah, whereas goals by Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo gave Liverpool a two goal cushion and mean Julian Nagelsmann’s Real Madrid side languished in a lowly 24th in the Champions League group stage table, only just clinging on for a playoff place.

However, in the league, Los Blancos have triumphed in their last two matches against Osasuna and Leganes, netting seven goals and leaking none and such form, along with a blip from Barcelona, has seen the defending champions climb right back into contention at the summit of Spanish football.

As matters stand, Ancelotti’s side sit second in La Liga, four points behind Barca with a game in hand, and will now be focusing on three more La Liga games against Getafe, Athletic Bilbao and Girona before a big Champions League clash at Atalanta BC on December 10.

Getafe has struggled away from home, earning just two points from six games, while Real Madrid has the greatest home record in La Liga this season with 18 points from their first seven games.

The significance of this weekend's match is demonstrated by the fact that Getafe has only triumphed six times in their last 38 La Liga games against Real Madrid and hasn't defeated the Blancos at the Bernabeu since February 2008.

Jose Bordalas's team defeated Real Valladolid 2-0 in their most recent league game on November 22 and defeated Manises 3-0 earlier this week to guarantee their place in the Copa del Rey's second round.

Getafe will be marginally the more recent of the two teams, having played on Tuesday night while their opponents played on Wednesday. The Deep Blue Ones have only defeated Real Madrid once since August 2012, but their previous encounters have been close, with Los Blancos only winning 2-1 in the corresponding game at Bernabeu last term.

With two victories, seven draws, and five losses from 14 games this season, Getafe has accumulated 13 points, placing them in 15th place and three points above the relegation zone.

They have only managed 10 goals in their 14 league games this season, which is the joint-worst record in the division. However, they have only given up 11 goals, which is the second-best defensive record.

Carles Alena is out for Getafe due to a muscle ailment, and Borja Mayoral is probably only going to be fit enough to sit on the bench because the former Real Madrid forward is now dealing with his own muscular condition.

Due to suspensions, the visitors will also be missing two key players on Sunday. Djene Dakonam and Bertug Yildirim received milestone yellow cards in the league match against Real Valladolid last weekend.

After scoring his first goal for the Deep Blue Ones against Real Valladolid, the 20-year-old attacker Alvaro Rodriguez, who is currently on loan at Getafe from Real Madrid, is eligible to play this weekend and is anticipated to lead the line.

In the UEFA Champions League league phase, Carlo Ancelotti's reigning Spanish and European champions are positioned just within the top 24. Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo's goals in the second half of Los Blancos' 2-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield in midweek were the result of an extremely subpar performance.

With a 4-0 thumping of Osasuna and a 3-0 loss to Leganes at Butarque, Madrid seemed to have recovered some form in La Liga before the November international break. They have had a difficult time adjusting to Kylian Mbappe's arrival and Toni Kroos' retirement; the 15-time European winners are not clicking at all.

As they push away from the bottom three and the relegation spots with only fight defeats in their 14 games so far this season, Jose Bordalas is once again leading a diminished Getafe team to perform above their capabilities during his second stint as manager. However, as is typical of their style of play, they have only managed two victories.

Getafe defeated struggling Real Valladolid by two goals to nil at the Coliseum last weekend, earning their second victory of the 2024–25 La Liga season despite Jose Bordalas's aggressive, hostile, and defensive style of play. Real Madrid loanee Alvaro Rodriguez and former West Bromwich Albion defender Allan Nyom both scored goals in the second half.
