One of the significant events in the football calendar is set to unfold at the Bernabeu on Sunday, featuring a clash between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the latest installment of the Madrid derby.

Real Madrid currently leads the La Liga table with 57 points from 22 matches this season, while Atletico sits in third place, trailing their capital rivals by 10 points before this matchup.

Real Madrid heads into Sunday's game following a 2-0 victory over Getafe on Thursday, securing their 18th La Liga win of the campaign thanks to Joselu's brace.

Leading the division with 57 points, Real Madrid is two points ahead of Girona in second place, with their only league loss this season occurring against Atletico on September 24. Ancelotti's team has won their last six league matches and faces crucial fixtures against Atletico and Girona in La Liga before heading to Germany for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 contest against RB Leipzig.

This marks Real Madrid's fourth encounter with Atletico this season, having suffered a 4-2 defeat in the Copa del Rey on January 18. However, they managed to secure a 5-3 victory over Diego Simeone's side in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals earlier in the month before triumphing over Barcelona in the final.

Despite missing key players like Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao due to ACL injuries, Real Madrid boasts the best defensive record in La Liga this season, conceding only 14 times. The team recognizes the significance of a positive result against Atletico before facing Girona, and their home form has been formidable, winning nine and drawing one of their ten league matches, with Rayo Vallecano being the only side to avoid defeat.

Atletico Madrid has somewhat operated discreetly this season, but they are enjoying a successful campaign on multiple fronts. The team has reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey and the last-16 stage of the Champions League.

Heading into the upcoming match, Simeone's squad holds an impressive five-game winning streak, including a 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano in their recent league fixture. This triumph brought their season points tally to 47 from 22 matches, comprising 15 wins, two draws, and five losses.

Currently, Atletico is tied on points with Barcelona in fourth place and holds a five-point advantage over Athletic Bilbao in fifth. However, their performance on the road in La Liga has been inconsistent this season, gathering only 13 points from 10 away matches.

As anticipated, Atletico continues to showcase outstanding results at Wanda Metropolitano, boasting the best home record in the league. Nevertheless, their away form has been less impressive, securing just four league wins on the road this term.

Atletico has struggled to defeat Real Madrid at Bernabeu in Spain's top flight since February 2016. However, in their last four league encounters with their arch-rivals, they have only suffered one loss.

During the January transfer window, Simeone's side strengthened their squad with the acquisitions of Arthur Vermeeren, Horatiu Moldovan, and Gabriel Paulista.

Real Madrid is concerned about the fitness of Antonio Rudiger, who left the game against Getafe due to a thigh issue. His availability is uncertain pending a late examination. This compounds the team's defensive challenges, with Militao, David Alaba, and goalkeeper Courtois sidelined due to serious knee injuries.

Additionally, Aurelien Tchouameni, an alternative for the defensive role, is suspended after receiving a late booking against Getafe. If Rudiger is unavailable, Dani Carvajal or Ferland Mendy may step into the center. There's optimism about Rudiger overcoming the knock to play alongside Nacho.

Joselu, despite scoring twice against Getafe, might return to the bench. Players like Eduardo Camavinga, Toni Kroos, and Carvajal are expected to return to the starting lineup after the Getafe match.

On the Atletico side, Jose Gimenez, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Thomas Lemar are unavailable. However, Alvaro Morata is likely to be fit to face his former club. Coach Simeone plans several changes from the previous match, with Molina, Lino, De Paul, Koke, and Griezmann anticipated to start. Memphis Depay may partner with Griezmann in the attack if Morata is not cleared. Vermeeren, Paulista, and Moldovan are likely to be on the bench, considering recent January signings.
