RB Salzburg vs Real Madrid

In a crucial Group H clash at the FIFA Club World Cup, Red Bull Salzburg and Real Madrid, both tied at four points, face off in Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field on Friday (BST) to secure a spot in the round of 16 and vie for the group’s top position. Real Madrid currently holds a slight edge due to a better goal difference.

Real Madrid’s campaign began with a 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal, followed by a challenging match against Pachuca on matchday two. Despite losing Raul Asencio to a red card just seven minutes in, Los Blancos secured a victory thanks to 10 saves by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and goals from Jude Bellingham, Arda Guler, and Federico Valverde.

After the match, coach Xabi Alonso condemned alleged racist abuse directed at Antonio Rudiger and expressed hope that the win would propel Real Madrid further in the tournament. A draw against Salzburg would ensure a top-two finish, but a loss of the group lead is possible if Al-Hilal defeats Pachuca.

Real Madrid, with five Club World Cup titles, remain unbeaten in the competition’s history, excluding a penalty shootout loss to Necaxa in 2000. They also defeated Salzburg 5-2 in their only prior competitive meeting during the Champions League League Phase five months ago.

Salzburg, making their Club World Cup debut, started with a 2-1 victory over Pachuca but were held to a scoreless draw by Al-Hilal in their second game. Coach Thomas Letsch expressed disappointment at not securing a second win to solidify their group standing

To claim the top spot, Salzburg must achieve a major upset against Real Madrid. However, they could still advance to the knockout rounds with a draw or loss, provided Al-Hilal doesn’t beat Pachuca.

Despite a poor record against Spanish teams (5 wins, 4 draws, 15 losses in 24 matches), Salzburg are confident in their attack, having scored in 16 consecutive games before their recent stalemate, with at least two goals in 11 of those matches. They aim to exploit Real Madrid’s vulnerable defense to keep their hopes alive for the group lead.
