Rangers and Celtic will clash at Ibrox Stadium for the third Old Firm derby of the season on Sunday, in what could be a decisive match for the title race.

This upcoming Old Firm match holds significant importance, as Rangers, despite currently being in second place, maintain an advantage, having won both previous encounters this season.

The ongoing season has witnessed one of the most intriguing title races in Scotland in recent memory, marked by both teams dropping points more frequently than in previous years.

Following a surprising weekend in early March where both teams suffered defeats, they have since rebounded with consecutive league victories. Despite Celtic leading the table, Rangers still possess a critical game in hand.

As the Premiership approaches its split with just two rounds of fixtures remaining, Celtic holds 74 points while Rangers trail closely with 73. Philippe Clement's squad is set to face Dundee midweek, providing Rangers with an opportunity to catch up.

A victory at home in this upcoming match, followed by a win against Dundee, would grant Rangers a five-point lead with only six games left in the season, a margin that many would consider insurmountable.

After just 23 games in command, Clement may win his 20th league title with Rangers with a 3-1 victory against Hibernian this past weekend.

Though they have only won one of the previous nine Old Firm derbies and have lost six, Rangers will need to quickly turn things around in this match.

This might be the first time in 20 years that the Gers have lost their opening three Old Firm games. The visitors will be encouraged by Brendan Rodgers' record of winning 12 of his 15 games as Celtic's manager.

However, Celtic had surrendered seven points in their first ten games of 2024—nearly unheard of in these parts in recent memory.

It was disastrous for Rangers to lose at Hearts the day after losing at home to Motherwell last month, especially after missing an early penalty.

However, the response has been outstanding, as they have defeated Livingston and St Johnstone back-to-back and advanced to the League Cup semi-finals, keeping the pressure on Rangers going into this crucial match of the season.

With the way the two teams are positioned, a draw will still put Rangers ahead, so anything less than a victory here will be a major letdown.

Abdallah Sima may earn his inaugural starting position for Rangers since January 2, having made a comeback from injury as a substitute last weekend against Hibs.

Clement faces a dilemma at left-back, with Ridvan Yilmaz and Dujon Sterling both returning from injury, yet Borna Barisic possesses greater match fitness.

There is certainty regarding the defender on the opposite flank, with James Tavernier recently setting a new British record by becoming the highest-scoring defender in league history with 131 goals.

Celtic has welcomed back Reo Hatate and Cameron Carter-Vickers from recent setbacks, and they are expected to feature in the starting lineup.
