On Thursday, Olympiacos and Fenerbahce will play the first leg of their quarterfinal match at the Karaiskakis Stadium, where they will start their battle for a berth in the Europa Conference League final four.

To get to this point, the hosts overcame Maccabi Tel Aviv in the round of 16, while their guests defeated Union Saint-Gilloise over two legs.

Olympiacos started their campaign in the Europa League in August, first defeating Genk and Cukaricki to advance to the group stage of Europe's secondary tournament. They will be back in continental action on Thursday, hoping to stake their claim to a continued European run this season.

The Greek team then entered group A with West Ham United, Freiburg, and TSC. Although they were not able to advance past the top two, the Thrylos' seven points were sufficient to secure third place and guarantee a spot in the Europa Conference League knockout round playoff, which would set up a matchup with Ferencvaros for a round-of-16 spot.

After losing 4-1 at home to Maccabi Tel Aviv last month, Jose Luis Mendilibar's team would go on to win 1-0 in each leg, with Ayoub El Kaabi scoring on both occasions. They then faced Maccabi Tel Aviv in the round of 16 and seemed to be eliminated.

The Thrylos faced a mountain to climb when they traveled to Israel for the second leg. However, they returned with a bang in their away leg, winning 4-1 in 90 minutes owing to goals from Daniel Podence, Kostas Fortounis, and El Kaabi. This victory eventually went to overtime, where Stevan Jovetic and Youssef El-Arabi scored to seal a 7-5 aggregate victory.

Olympiacos is back in action on the continent, aiming to reach the Europa Conference League semi-finals. They have defeated Lamia and Aris handily in the Greek Super League, most recently crushing the latter 5-1 on Sunday. On Thursday, they will try to make home advantage count by winning in Piraeus.

Fenerbahce, who began the season in the second qualifying round and defeated Zimbru Chisinau, Maribor, and Twente en route to the group stage, will stand in their way as they look to extend their successful run in the Europa Conference League this year. They have played 14 games so far to reach the quarterfinals.

At that time, the Turkish behemoths joined Ludogorets, Nordsjaelland, and Spartak Trnava. They won the group and eliminated the former with a better goal differential after collecting 12 points from their six games. This guaranteed them a spot in the round of 16.

This scheduled a match against Union Saint-Gilloise of Belgium. Michy Batshuayi, Jayden Oosterwolde, and Dusan Tadic scored in the 3-0 away win, which gave Ismail Kartal the advantage overall. However, they would lose 1-0 that same evening in Istanbul.

The Yellow Canaries then played Galatasaray in the Turkish Super Cup final this past weekend, fielding a youthful squad and leaving the field in the first minute of protest against the Turkish football hierarchy in response to the violent pitch invasion in their match against Trabzonspor. This came after the team's narrow 3-2 victory over Trabzonspor and their 4-2 victory over Adana Demirspor to maintain their pursuit of the top spot in the Turkish Super Lig.

In Thursday's away leg of their quarterfinal match, Fenerbahce will look to capitalize on their remarkable continental campaign and recent league form as they look to shift their attention back to the field and go back into play with a full-strength team.
