Newcastle United will aim to bolster their Champions League qualification hopes on Wednesday as they host Crystal Palace at St James’ Park in a Premier League clash.
Fresh off a commanding 4-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday, the Magpies sit fourth in the league with 56 points. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace, positioned 12th with 43 points, are coming off a heavy 5-2 loss to Manchester City on Saturday.
Newcastle overwhelmed Manchester United, inducing 13 high turnovers and generating six clear-cut scoring opportunities. The win marked their fifth straight triumph, though they were frustrated to concede, with United’s goal being only the third time in five matches that Newcastle’s defense was breached.
Eddie Howe’s team has been prolific in attack, scoring 11 goals across their last four games. However, Howe, sidelined by pneumonia, missed the Manchester United match and will again be absent, with assistant Jason Tindall stepping in.
A win could propel Newcastle to third place, overtaking Nottingham Forest, with 59 points—five more than sixth-placed Chelsea—leaving just six games to play. The Magpies have been formidable at home, winning four of their last five and six of their last eight Premier League matches at St James’ Park, with two losses.
Crystal Palace, despite a 2-0 lead against Manchester City by the 21st minute, were pegged back to 2-2 by the 36th. Manager Oliver Glasner will be concerned that his team allowed 12 significant chances, having previously conceded more than one goal in just one of their last 10 games, with five clean sheets.
The Eagles have been in fine form in the latter half of the season, losing only four of their last 18 Premier League matches while securing 10 victories.
Despite losing to City, the visitors had won six of their last seven games in all competitions and drawn one.
Palace's record against their hosts is reasonably balanced, having won two, lost two, and drawn four of their past eight top-flight meetings. Palace and Newcastle tied 1-1 in the rematch on November 30.
Glasner's team won each of their previous six away games without giving up and scored 13 goals, despite losing their last two away games.
