This Saturday, Nantes has the opportunity to hand Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) their first away loss of the Ligue 1 season as they meet at Stade de la Beaujoire for matchday 22.

Nantes secured a 2-1 victory over Toulouse in their first league game of 2024, while PSG sits comfortably atop the table with an 11-point lead over Nice following their 3-1 win against Lille.

Jocelyn Gourvennec's side ended a six-match winless streak in the league with their recent victory, marking their first lead in a domestic game since defeating Nice 1-0 on December 2. They have remained unbeaten since the opening matchday of the 2023-24 season when scoring the first goal.

During their slump, Nantes lost five out of six league matches, leaving them just three points above the relegation playoff spot currently held by Lorient.

In their last four home matches, Nantes suffered consecutive defeats in all competitions, failing to score in three of those games.

So far in the 2023-24 Ligue 1 season, Nantes has only managed to secure victories against teams positioned above them in the table twice: a 2-0 win over Strasbourg on matchday eight and a narrow victory against Nice in early December.

Their recent encounters with PSG have ended in four consecutive losses across all competitions, with multiple goals conceded in each of those matches. Their last victory against PSG was at Stade de la Beaujoire during the 2021-22 season, where they won 3-1.

Even when facing initial setbacks, the league leaders consistently demonstrate their dominance, as seen in their recent match against Lille last Saturday.

Their triumph over Lille marked only the second instance domestically in the 2023-24 season where they found themselves trailing. However, this deficit was short-lived, as they quickly equalized and took the lead just four minutes later, thanks to an own-goal by Alexsandro.

With 17 matchdays still remaining, Les Parisiens already appear to have a firm grip on the league title. They have maintained an unbeaten streak in 16 consecutive league fixtures, matching their longest run without defeat from the previous domestic campaign.

In their previous league encounter, PSG reached the 50-point mark after 21 matchdays, a promising sign for their title aspirations. Historically, the only French top-flight team that failed to win the league despite having this total or more at this stage of the season was Nimes in 1959-60 (51 points).

Under the guidance of manager Luis Enrique, PSG has won all four of their away matches in all competitions this year, scoring multiple goals in each of those victories.

Their convincing performance in the opening leg against Real Sociedad, securing a 2-0 win at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, has positioned them well to progress beyond the last 16 of the Champions League.

Bastien Meupiyou is expected to sit out the upcoming match for Nantes due to a knee injury, while Remy Descamps is nursing a groin strain. Additionally, Eray Comert is dealing with an ankle issue, and Kelvin Amian is in the process of recovering from an ankle problem.

Moses Simon is likely to be available for selection after participating in the Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria suffered a defeat to the Ivory Coast despite initially leading 1-0.

In recent matches, Mostafa Mohamed scored his team-leading seventh goal in Ligue 1, while Tino Kadewere scored his first of the season, proving decisive as the winning goal.

For PSG, Presnel Kimpembe remains sidelined due to an Achilles tendon problem, and Nuno Mendes is grappling with a hamstring strain. Sergio Rico is recovering from a head injury, Milan Skriniar has an ankle issue, and Layvin Kurzawa is managing a back problem.

Keylor Navas made his first domestic start of the season in the previous match, making crucial saves against Lille. He replaced Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal.

Goncalo Ramos and Randal Kolo Muani found the net for PSG in the last game, while Kylian Mbappe and Bradley Barcola scored in the second half to secure victory in the opening leg against Real Sociedad.
