When Honduras travels to Estadio Azteca for the second leg of their quarterfinal encounter with Mexico on Tuesday, they could pull off what could go down as the biggest upset in the history of the CONCACAF Nations League knockout round.

La H shocked the defending Gold Cup champions with a 2-0 victory in the first leg on Friday, moving them one match away from guaranteeing a spot at the Copa America in 2019.

Mexico is in danger of missing the CONCACAF tournament semifinals for the first time since the 2005 Gold Cup after their shocking loss on Friday. Prior to this, they had made it past the last eight in 11 straight quarterfinal games in the Nations League or that competition.

El Tri had not lost in 26 straight competitive games against Central American teams prior to their most recent game; their last loss came in a 3-2 loss to Honduras in 2017.

Jaime Lozano's team has only won one of its last five games across all competitions after winning a record-tying ninth Gold Cup last summer (2-0 over Ghana).

Not only have the Mexicans won every game at Estadio Azteca since losing 2-1 to the Hondurans in 2013, but they have also not been nearly as convincing in front of that boisterous crowd at that iconic stadium, with three of their previous five games played there ending in a goal or fewer.

They haven't let up a goal at home against La H since that 2013 loss to Honduras; the last time it happened was in a 3-1 victory for Mexico in November of 1996.

El Tri has given up several goals in four of their last five games in all competitions, and they have lost their last 16 games when they have given up goals in the first half.

The Hondurans' strong chances of reaching the semifinals were not something many would have predicted going into this competition, since they had only won one of their six competitive games.

Their winning streak in home Nations League games, which dates back to the 2022–23 competition, was extended to four games after they defeated their opponents 2-0 in the first leg of this tie. During that time, they had outscored their opponents 12-1.

Additionally, after losing their previous four games to El Tri by a combined score of 11-0, it was the team's first CONCACAF tournament quarterfinal victory in over ten years (1-0 victory over Costa Rica at the 2013 Gold Cup). Additionally, it was their first time scoring against and defeating the Mexicans since October 2017.

The Honduran defense has been nearly unbreakable since Reinaldo Rueda's return; in his six competitive games in command, his team has only let up once, kept five clean sheets, and won a shutout against Mexico.

At this event, La H has not won any of its away games against North American opponents. However, they are among the few who have triumphed over El Tri at Estadio Azteca, winning 2-1 in 2013 in front of more than 73,000 spectators.

In the eight games they have played in this competition, seven of them have come within ninety minutes when Honduras was leading at the half.
