Concluding an impressive Ligue 1 season, Paris Saint-Germain are set to head to the Stade Saint-Symphorien this Sunday to take on a Metz team that is fighting to avoid relegation in the playoffs.

While the team led by Luis Enrique enjoys their position at the top, their opponents are currently placed 16th in the final standings of the season and are at risk of automatic relegation depending on the upcoming results.

Although Metz showed promise with consecutive victories over Lens and Le Havre in April, their hopes for a miraculous escape from the relegation zone were shattered by a series of three consecutive defeats, putting them in serious danger of dropping back to Ligue 2.

Despite putting up strong resistance in high-scoring matches against Rennes and Lille at home, Metz ended up on the losing side in both games. However, neither of these losses was as devastating as their late collapse against Strasbourg in the second-to-last match of the season.

Heading towards securing valuable three points due to a goal by Georges Mikautadze, the team led by Laszlo Boloni maintained their narrow lead until the final moments of the match. However, a late 89th-minute goal by Emanuel Emegha and a header by Andrey Santos in injury time inflicted a devastating defeat upon Metz.

As a result, despite being three points ahead of 17th-placed Lorient, currently positioned 16th in the league, they still need to bridge a three-point gap to surpass Le Havre in 15th place. This situation leaves them precariously poised, needing at least a draw to avoid the threat of relegation, but with a challenging task ahead to avoid the playoff for relegation/promotion.

Should they find themselves in the relegation/promotion playoff scenario, Metz would encounter one of the three Ligue 2 teams in a series of matches to determine their top-flight status. However, amidst the disappointment, supporters can find solace in the team's impressive scoring streak in the top division, which spans 11 games, marking their longest run since 1995.

The approaching summer of 2024 signals a period of transition for several renowned figures across European football, particularly in management roles. Yet, for Kylian Mbappe, PSG's leading all-time goal scorer, his final season at the club is not unfolding as anticipated.

Georges Mikautadze's goal seemed to set Laszlo Boloni's team on a promising path towards securing three valuable points. They managed to maintain their narrow lead until the final moments of the match. However, a late strike from Emanuel Emegha in the 89th minute, followed by an injury-time header from Andrey Santos, inflicted a devastating defeat upon Metz.

Consequently, despite currently holding a three-point advantage over Lorient, who sit in 17th place, Metz still find themselves in a precarious position. While a draw would be sufficient to stave off immediate relegation, they face a three-point deficit to Le Havre in 15th place, leaving them teetering on the brink of the relegation/promotion playoff.

In the event of finishing in the 16th position, Metz would be tasked with a daunting two-legged playoff to secure their position in the top flight. However, amidst the gloom, fans can find solace in their team's impressive scoring streak of 11 consecutive games in the top division, a feat not achieved since 1995.

As the summer of 2024 approaches, Europe's football scene prepares for a wave of farewells, particularly among the coaching ranks. However, for Kylian Mbappe, PSG's leading goal scorer of all time, his final season is encountering unexpected hurdles, deviating from the script he had envisioned.
