Mallorca will strive to maintain their aspirations for European qualification when they host Getafe at Estadi Mallorca Son Moix on Sunday in their second-to-last La Liga match of the 2024-25 season.

Currently sitting in 10th place with 47 points, the hosts are only one point and two positions away from securing a Conference League qualification spot. Meanwhile, 15th-placed Getafe, with 39 points, are coming off a 2-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday and need just two points to ensure their La Liga survival.

Mallorca suffered a 2-1 loss to Real Madrid on Wednesday, managing to score their sole shot of the first half in the 11th minute. They deserve praise for holding firm until the 95th minute, when Jacobo Ramon scored the decisive goal for Real Madrid, following Kylian Mbappe’s equalizer past the hour mark.

Fans may be worried by the team’s recent scoring struggles, having netted only three goals in their last five games, with three of those matches ending without a goal.

Under manager Jagoba Arrasate, Mallorca are just one point behind eighth-placed Rayo Vallecano, their opponents in the season’s final match on May 24. However, Arrasate will need ninth-placed Osasuna, who have 48 points, to drop points to boost Mallorca’s chances.

Los Piratas have secured only one victory in their last five outings, losing three times, and have managed just four wins in their past 19 matches across all competitions, with 10 losses in that span.

At Estadi Mallorca Son Moix, the hosts have a slightly better record, having won three of their six most recent home games while suffering only one defeat.

Getafe, on the other hand, struggled to create chances against Athletic Bilbao, generating less than 0.5 expected goals (xG), recording just one shot on target, and managing only 11 touches in their opponent’s penalty area.

Managed by Jose Bordalas, Getafe are five points clear of 18th-placed Leganes, who sit in the third relegation spot. A victory on Sunday, or a failure by Leganes to defeat Las Palmas on the same day, will confirm Getafe’s safety.

Getafe fell 1-0 to Mallorca in their La Liga encounter on December 21 and have not beaten their hosts in four consecutive matches, losing three of those.

The Azulones are in worrying form, having lost their last six games, conceding 11 goals in that stretch while failing to score in their past five matches.

Getafe have also lost their last three away games without scoring, though they had won eight of their previous 10 matches on the road.
