Luton Town, a Premier League team, will have the advantage of playing at home in their upcoming FA Cup third-round match against League One's Bolton Wanderers on Sunday.
Luton heads into this fixture following a 3-2 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League, whereas Bolton secured a 1-0 win against Burton Albion in their recent League One encounter.
Despite Luton's position in the relegation zone, their 2023-24 campaign has shown promising aspects under manager Rob Edwards, displaying their ability to compete in the top flight. They've earned 15 points from four wins, three draws, and 12 defeats in 19 league matches, placing them 18th in the table. However, they're just one point behind Everton in 17th and have won two of their last three league games, showing strength during the festive period.
Their FA Cup third-round match against Bolton follows their 3-2 loss to Chelsea, where they made a late push but couldn't secure the equalizer despite mounting pressure.
While Luton has never won the FA Cup, they notably reached the final in the 1958-59 season, where they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Wembley. Last season, they were eliminated in the fourth round by Grimsby Town and will aim to avoid a surprising early exit in the 2023-24 tournament.
These two teams haven't faced off since 1997, when Bolton secured a 6-2 win against Luton in an FA Cup third-round replay. Luton hasn't managed to defeat Bolton in their last six matches.
In fact, Luton's last win against Bolton was in November 1981 during a Division Two clash. Ian Evatt's team, currently in excellent form, has won their last four League One games. Despite finishing fifth in League One last season and losing in the playoffs semi-finals to Barnsley, Bolton is now sitting in second place in the 2023-24 season, amassing 51 points from 24 matches.
Only two points shy of the league leaders, Portsmouth, Bolton also has a game in hand. However, their ability to sustain this strong performance throughout the season remains uncertain.
To reach this stage of the FA Cup, Evatt's team had to win two games, triumphing over Solihull Moors 4-0 and Harrogate Town 5-1 at home. Bolton has a rich history in the FA Cup, having won the trophy four times in 1923, 1926, 1929, and 1958.
Luton will continue without Marvelous Nakamba, Reece Burke, Dan Potts, and Tom Lockyer for their upcoming match against Bolton on Sunday. Additionally, Issa Kabore will be absent as he represents Burkina Faso in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Coach Edwards plans to make alterations to their regular Premier League lineup, with Tahith Chong, Carlton Morris, and Ryan Giles expected to start, and Tim Krul likely to take the goalkeeper position.
Regarding Bolton, Coach Evatt might select the same lineup that faced Harrogate in the previous round. Dion Charles, the team's top scorer this season, might be given a rest, offering opportunities for Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Dan Nlundulu as the front duo. Aaron Morley, with three goals this season, is anticipated to play in midfield alongside Carlos Gomes, who could secure a spot in the starting eleven.
