On Sunday afternoon, Livingston, positioned at the bottom of the league, will face off against Celtic, who are contending for the title, at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

Livingston finds themselves at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership, trailing by 10 points behind Ross County, the next lowest-ranked team. Meanwhile, Celtic is fiercely battling with Rangers for the championship.

Under David Martindale's leadership, Livingston has endured a notably disappointing season, only accumulating 17 points from their 30 matches, securing merely three victories and eight draws.

This season marks Livingston's poorest performance in the Scottish top flight since their promotion in 2017 and 2018, where they consecutively rose through the ranks, consistently finishing no lower than ninth in their six seasons in the Premiership.

The signs of struggle were evident for Livingston towards the end of last year, as they ended with their lowest goal-scoring tally of 36 and their highest number of goals conceded, reaching 60, since their induction into the division in 2018-19.

With just three games left before the split, and two against teams within the top three, Livingston is certain to enter the post-split matches occupying the bottom position on the table.

If Livingston is to extend their streak of playing in the Scottish Premiership for a seventh consecutive season, Martindale's team will need to stage a remarkable comeback, considering they currently lag behind Ross County, the next worst-placed team, by 10 points.

In the upcoming post-split matches, Livingston will have the opportunity to narrow this gap, facing off against the current bottom six teams of the Premiership. However, their track record against these teams this season isn't particularly promising, with only two victories secured against Hibernian and Motherwell back in August and October.

This leaves the Lions with just one win in their last 22 league matches, which was a 1-0 victory over St Mirren in mid-February.

On the other hand, Celtic enters this game amid a fiercely contested battle for the Scottish Premiership title against arch-rivals Rangers. The gap between the two sides is extremely narrow, with just one point separating them prior to this weekend's round of matches.

Despite entering this match against Livingston as the current league leaders, Rangers do possess the advantage of having one game in hand over Celtic, which could potentially propel them two points ahead in the title race.

Brendan Rodgers's team will likely feel assured about maintaining proximity to their rivals, having suffered only three defeats throughout the season, with just one of those losses occurring since the beginning of the new year, notably a 2-0 setback against Hearts at the start of March.

Despite the setback against Hearts, Celtic swiftly regained their momentum by defeating their upcoming opponents 4-2 in the Scottish Cup, promptly returning to winning form.

Nevertheless, Celtic will aspire for a more straightforward encounter than the hard-fought 4-2 victory, where Livingston managed to level the score on two occasions, keeping the match evenly poised until the final minutes. Celtic's decisive goals ultimately came from Daizen Maeda, who secured a hat-trick, and Kyogo Furuhashi.

This triumph marked Celtic's seventh consecutive victory over Livingston, with their last draw occurring back in October 2021 when former striker Giorgos Giakoumakis failed to convert a last-minute penalty, resulting in a goalless stalemate.
