Lille, who have yet to lose at their home stadium of Stade Pierre-Mauroy in 2024, will try to extend their remarkable home record when Marseille travels 2,000 kilometers to play them on Friday in Ligue 1.

After the international break, Les Dogues defeated Lens 2-1, and their southern visitors, despite using an additional man for the whole second half, lost to Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 at Le Classique.

With last weekend's visit from Lens, Lille strengthened their northern base to great effect and extended their undefeated run in home games to an incredible 14 games since Reims left the Stade Pierre-Mauroy with a 2-1 victory at the end of September.

Les Dogues took the lead thanks to a goal from Edon Zhegrova in the ninth minute. The Kosovo winger then doubled his day's total at the hour mark. Lens's Elye Wahi came on late to cut the deficit in half, but by the time the final whistle blew, his effort was for nothing.

With their sights set on a thrilling Europa Conference League quarterfinal matchup against Premier League surprise package Aston Villa, who will host their French counterparts in the first leg on Thursday, Paulo Fonseca's team has even higher continental goals in mind. Villa is currently ranked fourth in the Ligue 1 standings.

On Friday night, Lille, who lead the Champions League football race by three points over Nice and have the same gap as Monaco in third place, will look to defend their six-match winning streak across all competitions. They also have an 11-match scoring run going both domestically and on the continent.

Naturally, Lille's incredible scoring run in front of their home supporters is the longest in Ligue 1, but in sharp contrast, a deteriorating Marseille team travels far and wide north after failing to score in their previous two top-division games.

Following a depressing three-game losing streak in both Ligue 1 and the Europa League, new head coach Jean-Louis Gasset was flying high following an unexpected five-game victory streak during his first five games in command of the Olympiens.

It seemed insignificant to lose 3-1 to Villarreal, who they had thrashed 4-0 in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal match; however, since then, Marseille has conceded four goals while scoring zero against Rennes and PSG, who won in Le Classique thanks to Vitinha and Goncalo Ramos.

Strangely, both of PSG's goals came in the second half after Lucas Beraldo's red card in the 40th minute reduced the champions to 10 men. Les Olympiens' punishment for not capitalizing on their numerical advantage is that they are now one of three teams sitting on 39 points and outside of the European spots, sitting seventh.

Gasset's crop is only ahead of Reims and Rennes thanks to a superior goal differential, but Marseille has only managed a meager 10 Ligue 1 points away from home during their turbulent 2023–24 campaign—tied for the worst record in the division with bottom-dwelling Clermont and Le Havre.

Lille and Marseille's encounter in November concluded without a single goal being scored, however Les Dogues have won their last three home games against Les Olympiens since Andre Villas-Boas orchestrated a 2-1 victory for the visiting team during the 2019–20 season.
