If Lazio defeats Celtic at home on Tuesday, they may guarantee their spot in the Champions League knockout stages.

The Scottish champions, meanwhile, are in danger of leaving the tournament early after earning just one point from their four group stage games.

Lazio enters Tuesday's match in a dejected mood after losing 2-1 to Salernitana over the weekend, blowing a halftime lead. Maurizio Sarri's team now sits in 10th position with a very meager 17 points from 13 Serie A games.

When Ciro Immobile converted his penalty shot in the 43rd minute to become the first player to reach 100 away goals in Serie A, they appeared to be well-prepared for a victorious trip to Salerno.

But Salernitana's Grigoris Kastanos equalized the score within ten minutes of the restart, and Antonio Candreva, a former Lazio player, scored the game-winning goal to sentence the Biancocelesti to their sixth Serie A loss of the year and extend their league losing streak to three games.

Lazio is on the verge of making it to the Champions League knockout stages after earning seven points from their four group stage games, despite their disappointing domestic record.

Lazio drew 1-1 with Spanish powerhouse Atletico Madrid to start their group stage campaign. They then defeated the Dutch champions on matchday three, but also triumphed over Celtic and Feyenoord.

Lazio, who have won four of their last five competitive home games (D1), will know full well that if they triumph at home again on Tuesday, they would move on to the round of 16 should Feyenoord lose to Atletico in the Netherlands.

Celtic's prospects of making it to the Champions League knockout stages for the first time since 2012–13 are in shambles after they lost all four of their group matches.

They lost to Feyenoord and Lazio back-to-back to start their European campaign. They then tied Atletico Madrid at Celtic Park with a point, but they were unable to muster another strong showing in the second leg, losing badly 6-0 in the Spanish capital.

The Bhoys' humiliating encounter with Diego Simeone's team has resulted in 14 Champions League group stage losses since they defeated Anderlecht 3-0 in September 2017.

In addition to needing a small miracle to catch up to second-place Lazio, Celtic, who are at the bottom of Group E, will also struggle mightily to close the five-point gap between them and Feyenoord, who are currently in third place and guaranteed a spot in the Europa League playoff round.

Even though they won't lose in the league this weekend, Celtic will be heading to Italy after a lackluster 1-1 draw at Celtic Park against Motherwell, where David Turnbull believed he had won the match with a penalty kick in the 86th minute, only for Jonathan Obika to equalize in the 90th.

Even though the outcome might not inspire much, the Bhoys will remember their most recent visit to the Stadio Olimpico well—in November 2019, when they defeated Lazio 2-1 in the Europa League group stage thanks to goals from James Forrest and Olivier Ntcham.
