When Qatar plays Iran on Wednesday at Al Thumama Stadium, they will attempt to become the third country in history to make it to the Asian Cup final twice in a row. In the quarterfinals, Team Melli defeated Japan 2-1, winning with a stoppage time penalty, while the defending champions defeated Uzbekistan on penalties following a 1-1 draw.Iran has advanced to the Asian Cup semi-finals for the second time in a row, stretching their unbeaten streak to 18 games across all competitions.

For Amir Ghalenoei, who led Iran to the 2007 Asian Cup final eight where they were eliminated on penalties against South Korea, Saturday's victory was a moment of redemption. Although Iran has a wealth of talented players who play for clubs in the top European leagues, it is their heart that has carried them this far, as they overcame a scare in the last 16 and achieved their first comeback victory at the event since 2011 (a 2-1 victory over Iraq) on Saturday.

Team Melli has lost their past six Asian Cup semifinal matches; if Iran wins on Wednesday, they will go to their first Asian Cup final since they hosted and won the competition in 1976.

Since 1988, when the match finished knotted at one and Saudi Arabia won on penalties, the Iranians have never led in an Asian Cup semi-final.

Iran has won six of their past seven meetings with Qatar and is unbeaten in their last ten games against the Maroons. They have also failed to concede in six of their previous seven matchups.

Thanks to some excellent goalkeeping, the Qataris emerged victorious in an exciting quarterfinal match.

The hosts took the lead thanks to a mistake in goalkeeping by Utkir Yusupov. Uzbekistan missed two penalties in the penalty shootout, but they were denied three times, allowing the Maroons to advance to the Asian Cup quarterfinals for the second time in a row after losing at this stage twice before (in 2000 and 2011).

Tintin Marquez's team has only conceded once in six competitive games before to the Asian Cup knockout round. However, they have conceded a goal in both the competition's round of 16 and quarterfinals, which is one more than they gave up in the 2019 Asian Cup knockout stage.

In a thrilling quarterfinal encounter, the Qataris prevailed because of some outstanding goalkeeping.

Due to a mistake made by Utkir Yusupov in goalkeeping, the hosts took the lead. After losing at this level twice previously (in 2000 and 2011), Uzbekistan missed two penalties in the penalty shootout, but they were rejected three times, allowing the Maroons to make it to the Asian Cup quarterfinals for the second time in a row.

In their six competitive games before to the Asian Cup knockout phase, Tintin Marquez's side has only let up one goal. They have, however, let up one goal more than they did in the 2019 Asian Cup knockout round in both the competition's round of 16 and quarterfinals.
