Inter Milan, who are now tied for first place in the Serie A rankings, will face Roma on Sunday in an attempt to get their Scudetto defense back on track.

Inter lost to city rivals AC Milan in the Coppa Italia in the middle of the week after letting Napoli catch them by making a mistake in Bologna; in the meantime, their counterparts from the capital are enjoying a lengthy winning streak.

A clearly exhausted Inter team has had their ambitions of winning a domestic double cruelly dashed since defeating Bayern Munich to set up an alluring Champions League semi-final matchup with Barcelona.

Shortly after a late defeat to Bologna in Serie A, Inter Milan fell to their rivals Milan for the fifth time this season, with a 3-0 loss on Wednesday knocking them out of the Coppa Italia.

Eliminated 4-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals, Inter—who also lost to Milan in January’s Supercoppa final—have now suffered consecutive defeats for the first time this campaign.

Their last such streak in Serie A was two years ago, but with concerns mounting over their form and fitness, Simone Inzaghi’s aging team risks repeating that this weekend.

With their 13-game unbeaten run now over and conceding more goals than usual, Inter are tied with Napoli at 71 points in a close title race, leaving no room for further slip-ups.

Inter fans may take comfort in history as Roma visit San Siro: the hosts have won three of their last four home games against Roma.

Inter could also secure five straight league wins against Roma for only the third time ever, last doing so in 1978.

Meanwhile, Roma have won just one of the teams’ last 15 league clashes, losing seven of the last eight, including October’s earlier meeting.

Shortly after a late defeat to Bologna in Serie A, Inter Milan fell short against rivals Milan for the fifth time this season, exiting the Coppa Italia with a 3-0 loss on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Roma, with 12 victories in their current streak, are on track for an 18-game unbeaten league run, a feat not achieved since 2009-2010 under Claudio Ranieri, who is now their interim coach.

Since returning for his third stint with his childhood club, Ranieri—whose brief time at Inter was unfruitful—has calmly guided Roma from mid-table to challenging for European spots. Roma’s resurgence is striking: after a draw in the recent Derby della Capitale and a win over Hellas Verona, they’re just three points shy of the Champions League positions.

In 2025, Roma have outscored Inter and all other Serie A teams in points, leaving only historical precedent as their concern for Sunday’s match.
