Girona will host European-chasing Villarreal at Estadi Montilivi on Tuesday evening in an attempt to maintain their second-place standing in La Liga.

The host team is now in second place, two points ahead of Barcelona in third place, while Villarreal is in eighth place, four points behind Real Betis in seventh.

Girona has enjoyed an incredible season, finishing second in the standings with a record of 23 victories, 6 draws, and 6 losses from their 35 league games.

With Xavi's team playing Real Sociedad on Monday night, the situation may have changed before Girona's Tuesday kickoff. Michel's team is now two points clear of third-placed Barcelona.

After defeating Barcelona 4–2 at home on May 4, the White and Reds qualified for the 2024–25 Champions League; however, on Saturday, they were thwarted to a 2-2 draw by Alaves.

In the encounter on Saturday, Girona led Alaves 2-1 until Jon Guridi tied the score in the 99th minute. Despite this setback, Michel's squad was still able to extend their winning streak to four games, collecting ten of the twelve possible points after losing 3-1 against Atletico Madrid.

This season has been historic for the Gironistes, who are only in their fourth campaign at this level. After their victory this year, they will now try to defeat Barcelona to second place before getting ready for the challenging 2024–25 campaign.

Villarreal, on the other hand, comes into this game fresh off a 3-2 victory against Sevilla at home on Saturday.

Up to Alexander Sorloth's goal in the 97th minute of the match, the score remained tied at 2-2. Villarreal is still in the running for a European finish in the top division of Spain.

Marcelino's team is now four points behind Real Betis, who are currently in seventh position in the division and have qualified for the Conference League playoff round.

Villarreal had a difficult time getting results in the first half of the season, but they have improved greatly since the new year and still have a mathematical chance to go to the 2024–25 Europa League.

The Yellow Submarine, who took fifth place in La Liga the previous year, have triumphed in three of their past four league games. This season, they have collected 23 points from their 17 away league games.

Villarreal had defeated Girona 2-1 in their last meeting between the two clubs earlier in the season, although they have won three of their past four league games against the team.
