On Sunday night, Gaziantep and Fenerbahce, two teams at opposite ends of the Turkish Super Lig standings, square off at Gaziantep Stadium.

The visitors want to hold onto their advantage as they are now two points ahead, while the hosts are in dire need of points to stay out of the relegation zone.

Gaziantep started the year with back-to-back draws. Five days after the painful 2-2 draw against Pendikspor, in which they gave up a two-goal lead in the closing 13 minutes of play, they settled for a goalless draw with Hatayspor.

The only victory Marius Sumudica's team has had in their previous five Super Lig games came at the hands of Fatih Karagumruk 3-0 at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, snapping a four-game league losing streak.

But thanks to the draws against Hatayspor and Pendikspor, Gaziantep has now gone four games in a row without losing in the league for the first time since August 2022, when they opened the 2022–2023 campaign with three victories and one tie.

After 19 Super Liga games, the Gaziantep-based team has already recorded six victories, three draws, and ten losses. With 21 points, they are tied for 14th position in the standings with Ankaragucu, which is ranked 13th.

On Sunday, though, Sumudica's team will face a formidable opponent that has defeated them eight times in ten encounters, including the previous four.

Edin Dzeko scored a hat-trick in the first half as Fenerbahce defeated Konyaspor 7-1 at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Wednesday to register their largest victory of the season.

The first half saw goals from Mert Muldur and Sebastian Szymanski as well. In the second half, the league leaders were thoroughly beaten thanks to goals from Michy Batshuayi and an own goal from Ugurcan Yazgili of Konyaspor.

Since the first part of the season, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray have been leading the 2023–24 Super Lig title battle, with both teams breaking away of the pursuing group. However, following Gala's draw with Sivasspor on Thursday, the Yellow Canaries currently hold a two-point advantage.

Fener and Gala were scheduled to face off in the Turkish Super Cup shortly before the new year, however owing to what the clubs described as "some problems" in the event's organization, the highly anticipated match was called off at the last minute.

This weekend, Ismail Kartal's team will return to their successful road play. They have been on the road a lot this season, grabbing 25 of the 27 points that are available and remaining unblemished with eight victories and one tie in nine games.
