Group F of the CAF World Cup qualifiers will see Gambia play Ivory Coast on Monday afternoon at Tanzania's Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.
After winning their opening match of the competition, the visitors enter this one at the top of the group rankings. The visitors, who are currently in fourth place, are looking to gain their first point in this encounter.
The Gambia qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the third time in a row, therefore they entered this competition with a great deal of confidence and perhaps their best-ever team.
For the likes of their opponents in this match, participating in the largest tournament on the continent might seem like a must, but for the Gambians—who only made their AFCON debut two years ago—it is a highly outstanding feat.
Abedi Bigirimana, Frederic Nsabiyumwa, and Abdallah Sudi scored goals for Les Hirondelles in the Scorpions' 3-2 away loss to Burundi, while Musa Barrow and Ebrima Colley netted goals for the Gambians.
Even yet, the Scorpions will not give up despite having lost to begin their qualification campaign; under Tom Saintfiet's guidance, they should be able to do better as the competition goes on.
Six previous meetings between these two teams have resulted in four victories for The Elephants and two victories for Gambia.
While Ivory Coast had three consecutive appearances in 2006, 2010, and 2014, they were unable to qualify for the last two FIFA World Cup editions.
But Jean-Louis Gasset has one of the most talented teams in Africa, and they proved how good their offense can be when they crushed Seychelles in their first qualifying match.
With two goals apiece from Karim Konate and Hamed Traore, plus one each from Sebastian Haller, Jean-Philippe Krasso, Seko Fofana, Ibrahim Sangare, and Simon Adingra, the Elephants were simply too powerful in that game. They won 9-0.
According to the most recent FIFA World Rankings, the visitors are placed 52nd in the world. This will be their first meeting with Gambia in ten years; their most recent meeting took place in June 2013, when they won 3-0 on the road in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
With two victories and two draws in their previous four games across all competitions, the Elephants are now heavily favored to win this one as well as to top the group.
