Fluminense vs Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund will face off against Brazilian club Fluminense in their debut Club World Cup match at MetLife Stadium on Tuesday.

Fluminense secured second place in the 2023 Club World Cup, falling 4-0 to Manchester City, while Dortmund earned their spot in this year’s tournament through their four-year UEFA coefficient rankings, marking their first appearance in the competition.

Currently, Fluminense sit sixth in the Brazilian top division with 20 points, coming off a 2-0 victory over Internacional on June 2, where they generated just 0.34 xG from open play.

Impressively, Tricolor have scored 10 goals in their last four matches, matching the total from their previous nine games.

Fluminense have consistently found the net, scoring at least two goals in six of their last seven competitive matches, with their past four games featuring at least one goal before halftime.

Head coach Renato Gaucho can take pride in his team’s defensive solidity, as they head into Tuesday’s match with back-to-back clean sheets.

Fluminense remain unbeaten in their last six games, securing five wins during that stretch, though they drew two and lost three of their previous seven matches.

On the Dortmund side, they finished the Bundesliga season in fourth place with 57 points, earning a Champions League berth.

Manager Niko Kovac has been instrumental in the team’s turnaround, taking over from Nuri Sahin in January when Dortmund were languishing in 11th place.

BVB closed out the season in top form, winning their final six matches and remaining unbeaten in their last seven.

The German side have been prolific in attack, scoring 20 goals in their past six games and netting at least two goals in 10 of their last 12 matches.

However, Dortmund’s defense has shown some weaknesses, conceding 13 goals in their most recent eight games.
