Boavista and SC Farense will meet on Friday night at Estadio de Sao Luis as both teams attempt to move farther away from the relegation playoff berth.

The visitors are two points ahead of the home team in 10th place, while the hosts are four points behind the relegation playoff berth in 13th place.

After spending two seasons in the second level, Farense was promoted back to the top flight, however the season has been somewhat unpredictable.

Their record has collapsed, plunging them back into the relegation battle, despite their January surge as high as seventh position. Their most recent 2-1 loss to Arouca marks their 14th loss in the Primeira Liga this year.

Jose Mota's team is only four points ahead of Portimonense, who are presently holding the relegation playoff slot, as they have not won a single game in nine attempts (lost six, drew three) since their 3-1 victory against Casa Pia in January.

In order to stay in the top division, Farense must stop their downward trend, and they will have an opportunity to do so on Friday against Boavista, a team they have defeated in their last three encounters.

The visitors, however, have lost both of their last two games after suffering a crushing 6-1 loss to league leaders Sporting Lisbon last Saturday and a goalless draw against Rio Ave.

Under manager Petit, who was enjoying his second term at the club, Boavista got off to a strong start to the season. But starting in late October, their performance completely collapsed as they went on a disastrous six-match losing streak in all competitions (league, cup, and friendlies) that finally resulted in Petit's firing.

Since then, interim manager Jorge Couto and current permanent manager Ricardo Paiva have led Boavista. Even though their performance has slightly improved, they have not been able to produce a run of reliable outcomes.

The Chequered ones are in a risky situation, six points ahead of the relegation playoff slot, having not secured back-to-back league triumphs since September (victories against Estoril Praia and Chaves).

They need to win against Farense in order to establish themselves as the top team for another season. They have not won any of their past four road games (lost two, drew two), giving up nine goals while only scoring three, which raises concerns about their current record.
