At Fortuna Arena, the Czech Republic and Albania square off in the Thursday night matchup of the top two teams in Group E of the European Championship qualifiers.

The visitors have six points after three games going into their trip to Prague, while their hosts are in first place and have not lost. The Czech Republic team reassembles this week with the goal of getting closer to the Euro 2024 finals after finishing the 2022–23 season with a flourish by defeating Montenegro 4–1 in a June friendly.

Jaroslav Silhavy's team has enjoyed an unblemished campaign in the European qualifications so far and is in pole position to seal their spot in Germany, despite having five games still to play. This comes after failures in World Cup qualifying and the UEFA Nations League.

The Czech Republic previously defeated the Faroe Islands 3-0 in a friendly match. Ladislav Krejci and Vaclav Cerny scored in the first half to give the Czechs the lead, and Cerny added a second goal in the 75th minute to put the game away.

The Czech Republic leads the group by a point with seven points after three games after defeating Poland in their Group E opening in March, shortly before playing out a disappointing goalless draw with Moldova.

The defeated Euro 96 champions are actually barely ahead of Albania in second position, whom they are hosting in Prague before a friendly match against Hungary this coming weekend.

While its hosts have a long history in the European Championship, having won the title in 1976 as a united Czechoslovakia, Albania has only ever reached the finals, back in 2016.

But unlike the Czechs, Sylvinho's team is undefeated in Group E, and with a three-point lead over favorites Poland, there is considerable anticipation for yet another Euros berth.

Albania fared better in June's international window, winning over Moldova and the Faroe Islands both with goals from Sassuolo star Nedim Bajrami, despite losing to the Poles in their opening match after a dismal Nations League campaign.

The top two in each qualifying group will ultimately secure their place in Germany next summer, so former Lyon coach Sylvinho will want to keep that momentum going during this month's gathering, which has a more difficult schedule.

The Eagles will return to Albania on Sunday for what might be a pivotal match against Poland after visiting the country that is now officially called as Czechia, so increasing their point total before the games in October would be a huge plus.
