With a chance to secure a quarter-final spot, Costa Rica face the Dominican Republic in a CONCACAF Gold Cup clash on Wednesday at AT&T Stadium.

In their opening match, Los Ticos edged out Suriname 4-3 in a thrilling finish, while the Dominican Republic fell 3-2 to defending champions Mexico in a tight contest.

The Snapdragon Stadium crowd was treated to one of the wildest endings in Gold Cup history on Sunday, as Costa Rica clinched victory with a penalty in the 13th minute of stoppage time.

It looked like Miguel Herrera’s side was headed for disappointment after blowing a 2-0 lead and trailing 3-2 with less than 15 minutes left, only to mount a stunning comeback.

That dramatic win means Costa Rica can lock in a top-eight spot with a midweek victory, provided Mexico also beats Suriname.

Since a 3-0 friendly loss to the USA earlier this year, Costa Rica have been prolific up front, netting 27 goals across their last six competitive matches.

Los Ticos haven’t lost to a Caribbean team in a Gold Cup group stage since 2019, when they surrendered a 1-0 lead to fall 2-1 to Haiti at Red Bull Arena.

Wednesday marks the third all-time meeting between Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, with Los Ticos dominating the previous two encounters by a combined 8-1 scoreline.

Surprisingly, the Dominican Republic held their own in their Gold Cup debut against Mexico, matching El Tri’s intensity despite controlling just 37% of the ball and nearly pulling off a draw.

Marcelo Neveleff’s team needs a result to stay alive in the tournament and will aim for their first win against a Central American side since a 1-0 victory over El Salvador in the 2019 CONCACAF Nations League.

The Dominicans haven’t dropped consecutive international matches this year and haven’t lost back-to-back games against CONCACAF opponents since mid-to-late 2022.

Despite scoring multiple goals in three of their last five international matches, they’ve failed to win those, though the loss to Mexico was their only defeat in such scenarios since a 4-2 loss to Cuba in November 2022.

Los Quisqueyanos boast an impressive 13-match winning streak across all competitions when scoring first, including two clean-sheet victories in 2025.
