Thursday offers up a solid run of NBA entertainment, with easily the most highly awaited battle of the year thus far seeing the Cleveland Cavaliers hosting the Oklahoma City Thunder at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.

As the near-better team of their respective conferences with 10 and 15 consecutive wins the hosts and visitors would put-up a fierce battle in Ohio.

Though the scorecard does not say the whole truth, the Cleveland Cavaliers proved too strong for the Charlotte Hornets, who surrendered 115-105 to give the Cavaliers a perfect onset to the New Year.

Kenny Atkinson’s men led by as many as 24 points at one stage in the opening 24 minutes, but an unusually complacent second-half display saw hosts surrendering over half of the margin, although not quite threatening to lose the lead in the process.

There was shooting guard, Darius Garland, who scored 25 points on 8-14 shooting from the field for the Cleveland Cavaliers who saw four out of five of their starters score at least 17 points.

Not only are the Eastern Conference leaders unbeaten in their last 10 matches, but the aggregate score in those matches is double-figures every single time and they are now well-clear in first place of the Boston Celtics.

After recently beginning their four-game home stand with a win, Thursday night’s hosts will endeavor to do their part for the cause in front of their crowd before the Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers arrive.

Despite having lost only four games this season, the Boston Celtics were handed their biggest shock of the season when they battled against the Oklahoma City Thunder at the PayCom Center and lost by 105-92 on Sunday evening.

After trailing by 10 points at the half, Mark Daigneault's team pulled off the finest halftime defensive performance of the season, limiting the Celtics to only 27 points while scoring 50 points at the other end to cap an incredible comeback.

With a game-high 33 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists, MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander undoubtedly improved his chances of taking home the coveted title.

The Thunder are seven games ahead of the Houston Rockets at the top of the Western Conference and are poised to secure the top seed for the second consecutive season thanks to a franchise-record 15th straight victory last time out.

With a number of important players, including Alex Caruso and Chet Holmgren, still to return, the Thunder are definitely serious candidates for the championship and now get the chance to show themselves against another team.

Thursday's visitors have not needed to be as effective offensively as their hosts, who have averaged 122.5 points per game, second only to the Memphis Grizzlies (123.1), thanks to their strong defense, which has allowed the fewest points per game thus far (103).

Due to a sprained acromioclavicular joint in his right shoulder, Isaac Okoro is unable to play for the Cavaliers, although the small forward is getting closer to playing again.

Luke Travers, a two-way guard who hasn't played since mid-December because of an ankle injury he sustained while playing in the G-League, is certain to miss this one.

Chet Holmgren has been out of action for the Thunder for about two months due to a fractured right iliac hip, but he will be evaluated in the next few days to see whether he is ready to play again.

Adam Flagler is still recovering from a metacarpal fracture, and Alex Caruso and Alex Ducas will lose time due to hip and back ailments, respectively.
