Honduras will continue their 2026 World Cup qualifying journey with an away match against the Cayman Islands in George Town on Saturday.

The Cayman Islands, currently fourth in Group A of the CONCACAF second-round qualifiers, are struggling, while Honduras lead the group confidently.

The Cayman Islands’ hopes of advancing in World Cup qualifying are fading fast, with only one win and two losses in their three matches. They started with a tight 1-0 home victory against Antigua and Barbuda last June but had to forfeit their next match against Cuba due to visa complications stemming from US travel restrictions, resulting in a 3-0 default win for Cuba.

Shifting focus to the CONCACAF Nations League, the Cayman Islands earned seven points in four matches to secure second place in their League C group but were crushed 7-0 on aggregate by Guadeloupe in the play-in round. Their return to World Cup qualifying was equally tough, as they conceded four goals in the second half of a 5-0 loss to Bermuda on Wednesday, leaving them a point behind the top two with just one game remaining.

Colin Rowe’s team now faces a must-win situation in their first-ever clash with Honduras to keep their slim hopes of a top-two finish alive.

Honduras, on the other hand, are close to securing a spot in the third round after just two qualifying matches. They opened with a 3-1 win over Cuba in June 2024, followed by a dominant 6-1 thrashing of Bermuda, solidifying their grip on Group A.

Since their last qualifiers, Honduras have played 10 international matches, including two wins, one draw, and one loss in the Nations League, reaching the quarter-finals before falling 4-2 on aggregate to Mexico in November. They started 2025 with a 2-1 friendly loss to Guatemala but bounced back with a 7-3 aggregate win in March’s CONCACAF qualifying tie, earning a place in this summer’s tournament.

Under Reinaldo Rueda’s leadership, Honduras are now gearing up for their final two second-round World Cup qualifying matches, aiming to confirm their third-round spot and gain momentum for the Gold Cup, where they’ll take on Canada, El Salvador, and Curacao in the group stage.
