Cagliari, who are now bottom of Serie A, will try to escape their league problems on Tuesday when they play Cremonese in the Coppa Italia second round.

Only months after missing out on the playoffs the previous season, Cremo is riding high in Serie B, while the Sardinian team has only managed two points thus far.

Cagliari, who are still looking for their first Serie A victory of the new campaign, dropped to the bottom of the standings after five games after losing 2-0 to the unbeaten Empoli over the weekend.

In an attempt to finally get off the ground, Davide Nicola invited his former team to Sardinia; however, his new team has since dropped their previous three games and has only managed one league goal thus far.

Supporters of the Rossoblu are used to sluggish starts because, after five rounds under Claudio Ranieri, they scored just one goal and were still winless; finally, though, they made their way back to safety.

But, Nicola will be anxious to prevent a humiliating cup upset in midweek, as there will undoubtedly be some anxiety in the camp, ahead of an impending league matchup against potential relegation rivals Parma.

Cagliari, who finished second in the Coppa Italia in 1969 but have never won the Italian national elimination tournament, defeated Carrarese in the opening round of the competition last month thanks to goals from Roberto Piccoli, Leonardo Pavoletti, and Matteo Prati.

Just under four years have passed since these teams' last Coppa match, in which Cremonese lost 1-0 to Cagliari in the second round.

The Lombardy club, who are presently four points adrift of first place in Serie B, will look to change that result on Tuesday night after getting off to a quick start in their most recent attempt to do so.

Over the weekend, Tommaso Barbieri's late goal gave them a 2-1 victory over Catanzaro, who had defeated Cremo in the June playoff semi-finals before Venezia defeated them to advance.

The Grigiorossi are sure to fancy their chances against a team that has recently lost back-to-back home games after winning half of their away games in the league last season, which was good for Serie B's second-best record. This season, they have won two of their three away games.

Giovanni Stroppa is still in charge despite his team's 2023–24 failure. His Cremonese team opened the new season by defeating Bari in the Coppa Italia first round, which set up this week's match in Cagliari.
