Rivals from South America, Brazil and Argentina, will face off in a 2026 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night as they attempt to recover from unexpected losses the previous time around.

The match will be played after Brazil, who are sixth in their qualifying group, lost 2-1 at home to Uruguay, while Argentina, who are atop the table, lost 2-0 at home to Colombia.Brazil's performance in this qualification process has been anything but stellar; heading into Tuesday's match, the Green and Yellows have a record of two victories, one tie, and two losses for a total of seven points. This has placed them in fifth place, five points behind leaders Argentina.

After defeating Bolivia and Peru in back-to-back matches to start their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, Fernando Diniz's team was held to a 1-1 draw by Venezuela in their opening encounter in October.

On October 17, Uruguay defeated Brazil 2-0, and the following day, Colombia defeated the five-time World Cup winners 2-1. Luis Diaz scored a late brace for Colombia after Gabriel Martinelli had given them the lead in the game's fourth minute.

Brazil has one last game of the year left, which gives them the ideal opportunity to win over their devoted fans. However, a bad performance might cause them to finish outside the top six, which would be incredible even this early in the tournament.

The last time Selecao won the World Cup was in 2002. Since then, they have struggled to perform well, losing in the quarterfinals of four of their last five competitions, including the one in Qatar last year, despite widespread expectations that they would make it to at least the final.

Rather, it was Argentina who won the World Cup in 2022, defeating France in a thrilling final to take home the trophy for the third time in their history.

After defeating France in the championship game, the White and Sky Blues won four straight friendlies. They then triumphed over Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Peru in their first four 2026 World Cup qualifying matches, securing a comfortable lead at the top of the section with 12 points.

However, Uruguay surprised the world champions in a tense match last time around. Goals from Ronald Araujo and Darwin Nunez gave the visitors a 2-0 victory, which was Argentina's first loss since they lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia in the World Cup opener.

Even though Argentina has a long way to go until the qualification campaign ends and Lionel Scaloni's team is still leading the section by two points over second-placed Uruguay, Argentina will be keen to defeat their fierce rivals for the third time in a row in this encounter.

In their past three international matches versus Brazil, Argentina has won two and drawn one. Their most notable victory came in the July 2021 Copa America final, where Angel Di Maria's goal in the 22nd minute proved to be the difference between the two teams.
