Benfica vs Bayern Munich

Benfica can secure a spot in the Club World Cup's next round if they manage at least a draw against Bayern Munich on Tuesday at Bank of America Stadium.

Following a dominant 6-0 win over Auckland City on June 20, Benfica have accumulated four points from two group matches. The Portuguese team only needs a point against Bayern, who have already clinched a round-of-16 berth with six points.

Benfica overwhelmed Auckland, breaking the deadlock in stoppage time of the first half before unleashing a barrage of goals in the second, creating six clear-cut chances while preventing any shots from inside their box.

Under manager Bruno Lage, Benfica have made history by qualifying for the Club World Cup for the first time, having previously lost both matches they played in the competition’s forerunner, the Intercontinental Cup.

The Eagles finished the 2024-25 Primeira Liga season as runners-up with 80 points, mirroring their performance from the prior year.

Despite their convincing win against Auckland, Benfica’s recent form has been shaky, with that victory marking their first in five matches, though they only suffered one defeat in that stretch.

Lage’s squad has been prolific, scoring in each of their last 17 games and netting at least twice in 13 of those.

Bayern, meanwhile, secured a 2-1 victory over Boca Juniors on Saturday, becoming the first team to defeat a South American side in the Club World Cup in 10 matches.

Vincent Kompany’s side generated 11 shots, four on target, against Boca, compared to their Bundesliga average last season of nearly 19 shots and 7.5 on target per game.

A draw will see Bayern finish atop the group, setting them up to face the runner-up from Group B, D, F, or H in the next round.

Bayern have dominated Benfica historically, remaining unbeaten in their last seven encounters, winning six and scoring 20 goals.

Kompany’s team is unbeaten in nine matches, with six wins, and has scored three or more goals in five of their last seven outings.
