When Barcelona and Osasuna play on Thursday in Saudi Arabia, they will try to earn a spot in the Spanish Super Cup final.

The Catalan giants are the defending La Liga champions going into the competition, while Osasuna is playing in the Super Cup after placing second in the Copa del Rey the previous year.

Barcelona, who defeated rival Real Madrid 3-1 in the championship game after defeating Real Betis on penalties, is hoping to keep the trophy they won from the previous year when they travel to Saudi Arabia.

Although Barcelona won the competition for the first time since the four-team format was implemented in 2018–19, the Catalan giants own the record for the most Super Cup victories, having taken home the trophy 14 times.

Following a 3-2 victory over Almeria to close out 2023, Xavi's team started the new year strong, defeating Las Palmas in stoppage time and then defeating fourth-tier Barbastro 3-2 in the Copa del Rey thanks to goals from Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Fermin Lopez.

Barcelona can be happy that they have won three straight competitive games, but they may be disappointed that they haven't been able to control games; their last 12 triumphs have all come by a single goal.

Xavi's primary goal will be to lead the Blaugrana to their third Super Cup final in four seasons, even though he may wish to see his team put on a strong show as soon as possible.

They have won six of their last seven games against Osasuna (D1), including a 2-1 victory in the league match in September when Lewandowski scored a penalty in the 86th minute to secure all three points, so they will definitely fancy their chances of defeating Thursday's opponents.

After making an incredible run to the Copa del Rey final the previous season, Osasuna is excited for their first-ever Super Cup appearance. However, their hopes of capturing their first major trophy were dashed by a 2-1 loss to Real Madrid.

Los Rojillos finished in seventh place the previous season as well, but they haven't been able to duplicate that accomplishment this time around. They have 22 points from 19 league games, which puts them in 12th place halfway through the campaign.

In their most recent league match, they did manage to pick up three more points against Almeria, and then they defeated second-tier Castellon in extra time thanks to a goal from Jose Arnaiz in the 108th minute.

Osasuna has struggled to score more than one goal in seven of their last eight games, but they have kept three clean sheets in their last four games, indicating that they are a difficult team to beat.

Osasuna, the competition's underdog, will need to muster all of that defensive fortitude if they hope to put pressure on Barcelona and go to Sunday's final matchup either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid.

Securing a position in the championship game will be more difficult said than done, though, given that they haven't defeated Barcelona in the previous three and a half years following their 2-1 league victory away from home in July 2020.
