High-flying AZ Alkmaar of the Eredivisie will attempt to get off to a good start in Group E when Legia Warsaw visits the AFAS Stadion on Thursday after losing their Europa Conference League debut last month.

The Dutch team made a shocking error against Zrinjski Mostar in Bosnia, but Legia destroyed group favorites Aston Villa to start the tournament off right.

Building on last term's fourth-placed finish, AZ have won all but one of their domestic fixtures this season, and after dropping points for the first time last Thursday, the Alkmaar club eased to a comfortable victory against Fortuna Sittard at the weekend.

The team of Pascal Jansen drew back to within two points of PSV Eindhoven with a 4-0 victory at home. With 19 points after seven league games, they are currently in second place and looking to have a spectacular 2023–24 season.

Although Zrinjski Mostar, the first Bosnian team to participate in a UEFA competition group stage, defeated them in the Europa Conference League, it was still an impressive setback for them.

Jansen will have been especially concerned about the events surrounding AZ's defeat because he watched as his team lost a 3-0 halftime lead, frittering away their advantage in just 26 seconds of the second half to lose 4-3 at Stadion Bijeli Brijeg.Jansen, who has frequently been linked to the open Rangers position, wants to build on the Conference League semifinal appearance he made for AZ last year before being ousted by eventual champion West Ham United. But if there were any more surrenders like the one in the first week of this term, that would quickly end.

In contrast to their hosts, Legia Warsaw had a fantastic debut on matchday one as they defeated Aston Villa in their first Group E matchup after advancing through three qualifying rounds during the summer.

At Stadion Wojska Polskiego, four of the game's five goals were scored in the first half as Legia took the lead three times before finally holding onto it thanks to a key goal from Ernest Muci just after the half.

After several flips and turns, Poland's most successful club eventually defeated expensively assembled Premier League opponents after Pawel Wszolek scored after just three minutes.

Despite giving up 13 goals and needing a penalty shootout to defeat the latter in a playoff, Legia defeated Ordabasy, Austria Vienna, and Midtjylland to advance to this stage, so coach Kosta Runjaic hasn't had much time to catch his breath during Legia's spectacular European journey thus far.

Runjaic's team suffered their first loss in the Ekstraklasa on Sunday, losing 2-0 to Jagiellonia after six victories and two draws. Legia is attempting to win the championship for the first time since 2021.

But even if they didn't score for the first time since mid-July, the Legionnaires should be upbeat heading to Alkmaar, where they'll try to defy the odds once more.
