Atletico Madrid aims to bounce back in La Liga as they wrap up their 2023 with a home game against struggling Sevilla this Saturday. Originally scheduled for September, the match got postponed due to adverse weather conditions in Madrid, leading both teams to play catch-up in La Liga fixtures.
Facing recent challenges, Atletico experienced a 2-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao last Saturday and a 3-3 draw against Getafe at Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday. Despite holding a 3-1 lead against Getafe in the last game, Atletico conceded two late goals, resulting in a draw. Currently, they occupy the fourth position in the league table with 35 points from 17 matches.
With the same point total as fifth-placed Athletic, Atletico trails leaders Girona by nine points. Girona's upcoming match against Real Betis on Thursday and Real Madrid's visit to Alaves add further context to Atletico's position in the standings.
Looking ahead, Diego Simeone's team needs to focus on their own performance. The coming year holds promise, especially with the Champions League round of 16 on the horizon, where Atletico is set to face the formidable Italian side Inter Milan.
Atletico Madrid emerged victorious in both of their La Liga encounters against Sevilla last season, triumphing notably with a 6-1 win at Wanda Metropolitano. They hold the strongest home record in La Liga this season, securing 25 points from nine matches through eight wins and one draw.
Under the leadership of Quique Sanchez Flores, Sevilla began their journey positively, securing a 3-0 win against Granada in their latest outing. This victory marked their first in the league since September and elevated them to the 14th spot in the standings, having accumulated 16 points from 17 matches, with a record of three wins, seven draws, and seven defeats.
Sevilla's current campaign has been marked by disappointment, especially after finishing at the bottom of their Champions League group, resulting in their exclusion from European football in the latter half of the season. Their 12th-place finish last season was their lowest in La Liga since their relegation in 1999-2000, and this season has presented its own challenges.
The team is placing hope in Flores' appointment as head coach, with their recent three-goal victory against Granada - where Adria Pedrosa, Lucas Ocampos, and Sergio Ramos found the net - potentially serving as the much-needed catalyst for their season turnaround.
Atletico faces a challenge with Stefan Savic suspended after being red-carded in their last game against Getafe. Pablo Barrios and Thomas Lemar won't play due to injuries, but the team hasn't reported any new fitness issues.
Coach Simeone plans to make changes, with Cesar Azpilicueta likely to join the defense. Alvaro Morata might start alongside Antoine Griezmann after making an impact as a substitute in their recent match.
Sevilla deals with multiple absentees: Djibril Sow, Joan Jordan, Dodi Lukebakio, Fernando, Marcos Acuna, Tanguy Nianzou, Mariano Diaz, Jesus Navas, Loic Bade, Erik Lamela, Orjan Nyland, and Alfonso Pastor are out due to fitness concerns. Ivan Rakitic returns from suspension, but Coach Flores is expected to field the same lineup used against Granada.
Consequently, Suso and Oliver Torres are likely to play in midfield, while Ocampos is set to team up with Youssef En-Nesyri in the attacking third.
