Atletico Madrid will expect to make it nine consecuative wins in all competitions when they will resume the La Liga season against Sevilla at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday evening.
Diego Simeone’s men are at the third position on the La Liga table with 32 points, having played 15 matches of the current campaign, while Sevilla are at the 11th place on the table having accumulated 19 points from the same number of matches in the 2024-25 season.
In the Copa del Rey, Atletico remained unstoppable Thursday evening; they advanced to the third round after a 3-1 win over Cacereno.
The Red and Whites came into La Liga Matchday on the back of a 5-0 thrashing of Real Valladolid last weekend and were also coming off a convincing 6-0 Champions League win over Sparta Prague at the end of the last month, During which Simeone and his men had recorded an imposing run of eight straight victories in all competitions.
They have produced their last four in the league against Las Palmas, Mallorca, Alaves and recent champions Real Valladolid and are third in the table, one point behind Real Madrid and five from leaders Barcelona with a game in hand.
As such, Atletico has to be considered title contenders at this juncture, especially because their defense has been the best in La Liga with only eight goals conceded in fifteen games.
The Red and Whites have also not lost a league match at Wanda Metropolitano this season and have garnered 17 points from the seven matches played, while the Sevillistas have won only one of their seven away league fixtures in 2024-25 campaign.
Sevilla, on the other hand, will come into this match with a three-game unbeaten streak, having picked up four points in their last two league games against Rayo Vallecano and Osasuna before defeating Olot 3-1 in the Copa del Rey on Thursday night.
Garcia Pimienta's team has not lost since a 1-0 loss to Leganes on November 9, but the campaign has once again been disappointing, with 19 points placing them in 11th place in the table, 10 points behind the Champions League berths.
Sevilla's defensive record this season has been quite excellent, with just 19 goals conceded, but they have struggled offensively, scoring only 14 goals, ranking joint-third worst in the division.
Los Nervionenses finished 14th in La Liga last season, their lowest campaign since being demoted in 2000, and they look a far way from the team that placed fourth in three straight seasons between 2020 and 2022.
Sevilla defeated Atletico 1-0 at Estadio Ramon in February, but lost 1-0 at Wanda Metropolitano at the end of 2023.
