For three points on Thursday, Astana and Viktoria Plzen will compete in a UEFA Europa Conference League early kickoff.
In the Czech Fortuna Liga, Viktoria Plzen lost 2-1 on the road to league leaders Sparta Prague. The first half saw the scoring of all three goals, with Qazim Laci and Jan Kuchta each scoring once to lead their team to victory.
The Conference League is where Miroslav Koubek's team will focus their efforts after narrowly defeating FC Ballkani with a 1-0 home victory in their first game there. Dinamo Zagreb, a formidable opponent from Croatia, destroyed Astana 5-1.
The loss dropped the Kazakh team to the bottom of Group C, where Plzen are currently in second place.
The two sides will meet for the first time at this time.FC Astana has gone five games without losing at home while winning four of those contests. The weekend's loss to Sparta Prague broke Viktoria Plzen's 12-game winning streak in all competitions. In three of their four Conference League home games (including qualifiers), FC Astana was in the lead at the break.
In the Conference League, Viktoria Plzen has won six straight games (including qualifiers). In five of Viktoria Plzen's past six away games in all competitions, there were goals in each half and three or more goals were scored. After five straight games in which both teams scored, Astana's weekend loss to Aktobe put an end to that streak.
Both teams had contrasting openings to their campaigns, with Plzen edging out Astana in Zagreb by a slim margin.
The reigning champions of Kazakhstan will be hoping to get back on track because another loss here could result in their early exit from European competition. While Plzen will be disappointed that their winning streak was broken over the weekend, they will still have a lot of faith in Miroslav Koubek's team.
Despite the possibility of a single team winning, we are betting on a scoreless draw.
The hosts are coming off a weekend loss to Aktobe in the Kazakh Premier League, which they lost 2-0 on the road. China and Alibek Kasym each scored goals in each half to propel their teams to victory.
