Ajax will welcome FC Twente on Sunday afternoon in a crucial match where they desperately seek three points to secure a top-four finish in the Eredivisie standings. Conversely, FC Twente travels to Amsterdam aiming for a win that would edge them closer to securing third place.

Even during periods of underperformance, Ajax has maintained hopes of clinching fifth place and securing a Europa Conference League playoff spot. However, fourth place remains a feasible target, with a seven-point gap to AZ Alkmaar, despite suffering a humiliating 6-0 defeat against Feyenoord last weekend, marking their lowest point of the season.

This defeat against their arch-rivals was unprecedented in Ajax's history, being only the fifth time they have suffered such a substantial loss. Despite having favorable fixtures in their remaining four games, facing in-form Twente is a challenge that John van't Schip and his team could have done without.

In their recent couple of matches at their own stadium, Ajax have either netted goals late in the game to ensure they don't leave empty-handed or allowed a last-minute goal resulting in dropping crucial points, a fact that will surely not escape the attention of their upcoming adversaries.

Fueled by their humiliating loss to Fenerbahce in the Europa Conference League playoffs, Twente have practically guaranteed themselves a place in a continental tournament for the next season.

Twente currently hold an eight-point advantage over AZ, who sit in fourth place, with only five matches remaining. Securing the third spot carries the incentive of entering the third qualifying round of the Champions League.

Despite having Ajax and AZ still to face in their schedule, Joseph Oosting and his squad must remain focused and not become overly confident. However, they have managed to accumulate 16 points from their last seven league matches.

Their most recent outing saw them secure a 2-0 victory against Fortuna Sittard, marking their fourth consecutive win at home. Additionally, they boast the third-strongest away record in the league, having garnered 23 points from 14 away games.

Van't Schip is bound to make adjustments to his initial lineup for Ajax, with Chuba Akpom poised to rejoin the squad. Players such as Josip Sutalo and Brian Brobbey were on the bench during the Feyenoord match and might be reinstated in defense and offense, respectively.

Jordan Henderson is vying for a comeback from his injury, although it remains uncertain if he'll be deemed fit to start, having not played since before the international break.

On another note, Youri Regeer is a potential starter for Twente at left-back, possibly taking over from Gijs Smal, who was substituted at halftime against Fortuna Sittard.

The rest of the team could conceivably remain unchanged, with Ricky van Wolfswinkel likely to lead the attack once more after scoring his 13th goal of the season in the previous match.
