Red Star Belgrade and Young Boys will square off in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with third place in Group G up for grabs for both teams.
In the group stage, both teams have only managed one point between them from their four games; nonetheless, the winner on Tuesday will guarantee third place in the group and a spot in the Europa League.
With just one point from four games, Young Boys is now bottom of Group G. They drew their away encounter against Red Star Belgrade at the beginning of October.
The Swiss squad began their group stage campaign with a 3-1 home loss to RB Leipzig. They have now lost their last two games in the competition, 3-1 at home and 3-0 away, to Manchester City, proving they lacked the talent needed to compete with the defending champions.
If Young Boys win on Tuesday, they'll take third place in the group and a spot in the Europa League. If they draw, the match will go to the final matchday, where Raphael Wicky's team plays RB Leipzig while Red Star Belgrade plays Man City. Raphael Wicky's team may have the easier match.
The current Swiss champions placed fourth in their most recent group stage appearance in the Champions League (2021–2022). However, they did compete in the Europa League in 2020–21, making it to the competition's final 16 before falling to Ajax.
Young Boys will go into this game having suffered a 3-1 setback to Zurich in the Swiss Super League on Saturday. As a result, they are now two points behind the team who defeated them the previous time around in the table.
Red Star, on the other hand, sits three points behind Partizan Belgrade at the top of their domestic league and comes into this match fresh off a 2-1 victory against Vojvodina on Saturday.
The Serbian team lost 3-1 to Man City in their Champions League group stage opener before drawing 2-2 at home against Young Boys.
The Red-Whites have fallen short of Leipzig in their last two games in the competition, but they were both very tight losses—first, 3-1 in Germany, and then, 2-1 in Serbia earlier this month.
As previously indicated, if Barak Bakhar's team could secure all three points on Tuesday night, they would rank third in this area.
Red Star participated in the Europa League in the previous season but was not successful, placing fourth in Group H. However, they advanced to the competition's knockout stage in 2021–22, losing to Rangers.
