Arsenal travels to West Ham United on Wednesday for their EFL Cup fourth-round match, hoping to overcome their London rivals for the fourth time in a row.
Both teams won their third-round matches 1-0: Mikel Arteta's team narrowly defeated Brentford, and the Irons edged past Lincoln City.If recent performance is any indication, West Ham's chances of adding domestic hardware to their Europa Conference League title from the previous season are slim to none. They have yet to add an EFL Cup trophy to their collection, having only advanced to the final once in 1981.
The hosts' impressive start to the campaign is now history as they go winless for the first four games of the season. David Moyes's team worked hard to defeat their third-tier opponents, only losing to Tomas Soucek's winner with 20 minutes remaining.
A 2-2 draw with Newcastle United was admirable, but defeats by Aston Villa (4-1), Olympiacos (2-1) in the Europa League, and Everton (1-0) at home—who defended well and took all three points thanks to a goal from Dominic Calvert-Lewin—have raised some red flags.
In addition to going five games across all competitions without keeping a clean sheet, West Ham's inability to breach the opposition defense in their home match against Everton was a first for the Hammers in 2023; prior to that, the team had failed to breach the opposition backline in eighteen consecutive games at the London Stadium.
The West Ham fans may or may not welcome the £105 million player back to his old haunts, but juggling three competitions during a merciless winter seems to be catching up to the Declan Rice-less team. Nevertheless, juggling domestic and continental duties hasn't proven to be a major issue for their in-form visitors thus far.
The Gunners were treated to two man-of-the-match performances from their two best attackers. Gabriel Jesus took center stage against Sevilla, but injury concerns returned for the Brazilian, who gave Eddie Nketiah the offensive reins for Sheffield United's visit.
Almost two years after scoring his first Arsenal hat-trick in the EFL Cup, the unstoppable Nketiah achieved the first Premier League treble against the Blades, who were also defeated 5-0 by Takehiro Tomiyasu's first Gunners goal and a penalty kick by Fabio Vieira.
Arsenal needed just one goal to guarantee a safe passage into round four of the EFL Cup as an early Reiss Nelson winner sent Brentford packing in September. Arsenal has now gone ten games without a loss since the start of the new top-flight campaign, an achievement only North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur can share.
While not raising the trophy since Paul Merson and Steve Morrow defeated Sheffield Wednesday in the 1992–93 season, some Arsenal supporters believe it is past time for their team to win a mid-season trophy again. Nevertheless, few Arsenal supporters should be losing sleep over their team's EFL Cup exits.
The Gunners have only lost on penalties to Liverpool in 2019 after an amazing 5-5 draw at Anfield in their previous six fourth-round matches. However, they famously threw away a two-goal lead at the London Stadium in April, where a 2-2 draw with West Ham put another nail in their title coffin.
