On Friday night, West Bromwich Albion hosts Southampton in an attempt to solidify their grasp on a spot in the Championship playoffs.

The Saints are now in third place in the rankings, having lost their first game since September earlier this week, while the Baggies are in fifth place.West Brom has only once, in the whole season, pulled together a winning run of three games; since the beginning of December, the team has suffered five league losses.

However, coming into this match, Carlos Corberan's team has a four-point lead over the opposition in the battle for a top-six position as a result of earning seven points from their previous three games.

After losing leads twice against Ipswich Town on Saturday, there was understandable fury, but three days later, West Brom defeated Cardiff City 2-0.That was the Championship's sixth straight win at The Hawthorns, with just one goal let up—to Blackburn Rovers when they were already up 3-0—during that run.

Because of their defensive run, West Brom has the third-best defensive record in the division thus far in the season. They will test this against teams that have the second-best offensive statistics.
However, Southampton is entering a game on the heels of a loss for the first time since September 30 when Bristol City ended their incredible undefeated streak.

Before the Robins' three goals in the second half at Ashton Gate put the Saints to the sword, the visitors had gone 25 games without losing in all competitions. The visitors added a late consolation goal from the penalty spot.

After Southampton's thrilling 5-3 victory against Huddersfield Town three days prior, Russell Martin could have been worried since Southampton hadn't let up three goals in a game since September 15.

They have now shipped six times in two games, their sixth game since February 3. Prior to this, they had let up the same amount of goals in their previous 13 games across all competitions.

Martin knows that his team needs to respond if they are to stay two points behind Leeds United in the hunt for second place, even if they are now in third position and two points out of the automatic promotion spots.
