The Hornets head back to the rigours of Championship football as up and coming Sunderland make the journey to Vicarage Road on Saturday.

Manchester City hosted the Hornets in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, and the Black Cats have had an extra week of preparation as their second-tier match at the Stadium of Light was played over the weekend.

Having been thumped 15-0 across the last two encounters with Manchester City and overwhelmed 43-5 ON aggregate, Watford must have been dreading their third round EFL Cup tie with Pep Guardiola’s men on Tuesday night, but a second tier side would have got a decent send off.

To make it worse, for the fifth time in the last six matches across all competitions, the Hornets gave a away goal within five minutes of the match start through a Jeremy Doku goal before a Matheus Nunes second in the first half, although the Hertfordshire side got a stoppage time consolation through a Tom Ince superb free-kick.

Taking the bigger perspective though, Tuesday’s 1-0 loss at the scene of current top-flight champions means that Watford is currently on a run without a win in their last four games across Championship and EFL Cup, a far cry from the stunning run of winnings in five successive matches in August.

Another second tier match also spelt more misery for the Hornets in their most recent fixture on September 21 when they were hammered yet a fourth time in five matches as Norwich City edged past the visitors 4-1 with goals from Callum Doyle, Borja Sainz, Marcelino Nunez and Ben Chrisene.

Watford will be buoyed by their impressive home record going into this weekend's match against the Black Cats, even though they have struggled since the end of the month. The hosts are undefeated in their last six games at Vicarage Road, including a preseason friendly against Premier League Brentford in early August.

Scouts from Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, the eventual Champions League finalists, were present when Sunderland's bright young talent, Chris Rigg, scored the game's lone goal to lead his team to victory over Middlesbrough at the Stadium of Light last weekend.

The North-East giants finished 16th in the second tier after a turbulent 2023–24 season. Since emerging from the depths of League One in 2022, the Black Cats have boasted young players with potential in their squad. However, as was the case last season, the environment necessary for those types of players to succeed has not always been present.

Following a challenging 12 months, Regis Le Bris is starting to change the story at the Stadium of Light. The Frenchman has guided Sunderland to five victories from his first seven competitive games in charge, putting the disappointment of his Ligue 1 relegation as head coach firmly behind him.

With six games played and a commendable total of 15 points, the Black Cats trail league leaders West Bromwich Albion by only one point heading into the October international break. This is due to last weekend's maximum against Michael Carrick's Boro.

Though the forward scored just once in 11 appearances during the previous season, 21-year-old Romaine Mundle is presently leading Sunderland's early Golden Boot race with three goals in six Championship outings—quite suitable for a team that places a strong emphasis on developing young talent.
